Minor Rain is an artist of real diversity and depth who has a deep emotive connection with the music he produces. An accomplished musician who plays piano and sax, drawing on influences from a range of diverse sources from film scores and sound design to artists covering all spectrums of electronic music such as Noisia, Audio, Amon Tobin and Hans Zimmer to name a few. Taking inspiration from artists of that caliber, high-end production values were always going to be an integral part of his work, this providing the foundation for his musicality, with the two elements complimenting each other perfectly. He’s an artist whose aspiration is to produce something truly unique and original. 

His latest release, forthcoming on Addictive Behaviour, highlights his ability to not only work at different tempos but also how he’s able to go from the melodic, to the dark and minimal or stylishly blending both laid over precision engineered drum edits.

Shimmering high hats, reverbed bleeps and haunting strings open the Flux track before a short kick and snare leads to the breakdown. Crunchy vox sounds combined with filtered drums and metallic synths ready the track before dropping into a big growling metallically industrial synth and weighty sub that drives the track on. And with a few subtle synth and bass switches this makes for a polished, dark and techy slammer of a track.

Akira Akira calls us onto the ball court with "Sneakers" and skitters his way to the basket to deliver a slam dunk, while Oviedo based Fearz plays offence with "Hit It From Da Bak"; a powerful ghetto house slapper that will get butts moving, no doubt. Slowbody & Holly buddy up on "Give Me That (Of Gold)", and they really mean it. Give it to them with the same urgency that Sage Armstrong & Astronomar demand their coffee in the morning, as portrayed in their wake-up anthem "Coffee Sizzippin". Smooth delivers another raucous selection on Mainframe Recordings; after spending time on labels such as Ram, Elevate Records, Viper Recordings and many other labels which have shaped the game from the beginning, he returns to Mainframe following a string of live performances at their club nights. Although with Mainframe standing as one of the most influential drum & bass promoters from Europe, it’s no surprise that Smooth would be a part of its roster for another release, primarily due to his hotly anticipated DJ sets at the Mainframe venues. ‘Anger’ encapsulates the full-frontal assault of his DJ sets and it’s something he injects directly into his own sound, which translates well whilst he maintains his high levels of production. This is part of the Smooth play book and it’s one reason why he’s been added into the ranks of Mainframe Recordings, for both his live performances and his music.
‘Anger’ delivers the hooks and grooves which Smooth’s more dancefloor orientated tracks are well-versed in. With a danceability which oozes through the track, it’ll prove to be a pivotal part of any DJ set list. Alongside its distorted track elements, the type of which underpin each twisting bass, Smooth provides a composition that could blast through any speaker and cause the upmost devastation. He makes a return with the help of Mainframe Recordings and highlights that he’s as destructive as ever when it comes to his more explosive deliveries.

The Test of Power & Strength had pitted the raw might the adventurer against impossible odds, and yet through their incredible prowess they had survived to proceed to the next trial. As they stepped into the first true room of the temple complex, leaving its massive courtyard behind them, the adventurer was perplexed to find but a single set of doors before them as the voice of the temple’s mysterious inhabitant boomed forth from its walls once more. 

“In the first trial, you were tested upon strength of body alone, but herein such brutish brawn alone will not see you succeed. Beyond this door lays the third and final trial & the knowledge you seek, but you must first prove that your spirit is pure and that your soul is clean of any ulterior motives should you ever hope to leave. This is the second trial of the temple. This is the TEST OF SPIRIT & SOUL.”

The voice departed as quickly as it had arrived, and the adventurer moved to step through the door. Flinging open the great door they found themselves alone, suspended above a great void by an animalistic spirit that seemed to emerge from their own bodies. The adventurer hung precariously from this great creature, and as the beast began to move their connection was tenuously held by only the smallest movements of the adventurer’s body. Battered by wind and wave of doubt and dread at what might lay before them, the adventurer journeyed through the spirit realm on virtue of thought alone,before finding themself deposited beyond the threshold of the very door that they had stood before both so recently and yet so long ago. They were approaching the knowledge that they had for so long sought, but before them lay the third and final trial, which promised to push their limits further than any that had come before.

The name Burr Oak should already be very familiar to Trendkill Records’ most ardent followers. The emergent drum and bass supergroup, formed of Toulouse producers Opsen and The Clamps, burst onto the scene last year, striking listeners with their intense, no-holds-barred approach to neurofunk. Drawing on their ever-innovative sound design skills and prolific work rate, the two Frenchmen crafted a whopping four releases for the Prolix-helmed label last year and have since guested on Eatbrain and Cause4Concern in 2020. Now celebrating a homecoming of sorts, October finds the pair returning to Trendkill for the Polar Lows EP, which features a seismic alliance with Austrian duo TR Tactics. 

Showcasing their production prowess, the individual contributions from each member of Burr Oak shine through over the course of the three-track project. As a former member of the innovative trio Signs, well-known for their halftime contributions to labels like Noisia’s Division, Opsen audibly leaves his mark on opener and title track “Polar Lows”, which utilises flourishes of snarling, hip-hop inspired breakbeats before searing synths launch it into a riotous climax. Meanwhile, some of the blistering basslines on show throughout the EP are well-aligned with The Clamps’ signature sound, the sum of the two’s contributions making for phenomenal results. 

Add Trendkill labelmates TR Tactics into the mix on “Washoku” and expect a four-way collaboration of epic proportions, deploying both heavyweight synth work and fleeting, atmospheric pauses. Rounding off the EP is the brooding, progressive “Intelligent Suicide”. Introduced with melancholy ambiances and subdued stabs before hurtling towards a gritty, mechanical crescendo garnished with whirring feedback and drilling basses, the song makes for one of the pair’s most intriguing creations to date, serving as a firm reminder that these two titans of the neuro scene have plenty more tricks up their sleeves.
