Soundway Records, along with the Goethe-Institute and Adaptr.org, present TEN CITIES a new compilation including, amongst many others, the likes of Bristol dubstep producer Pinch, Lisbon-based producer Batida and Kenyan group Just A Band, TEN CITIES is set for release on 10th November on CD, 3xLP and digital.

Between Autumn 2012 and Spring 2013 the TEN CITIES project brought electronic music producers and musicians from five cities in Europe (Berlin, Bristol, Kiev, Lisbon and Naples) to five cities in Africa (Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, Luanda and Nairobi) They were invited to collaborate and create, spending an intense time together making music in sticky studios and blacked-out rooms across the African continent.

TEN CITIES  put together approximately 50 electronic music producers and instrumentalists from the ten cities selected. They were invited to collaborate in studios over the course of more than six months. A selection of the outcome of these cross-continental experiments can be heard on this record.

It's no surprise that the results are far from what many would term 'World Music' and its often generic mixture of aural clichés, where all too often African music (as with that of the rest of the planet) from Mali to Madagascar, and from Morocco to Malawi is all filed under one ridiculous, meaningless genre. 

TEN CITIES attempts to do something quite different: whilst searching for common ground it is also trying to highlight the differences. As a result hip-hop from the squats of Naples, bass music from Bristol, experimental techno from Berlin or jazz-tinged deep-house from Kiev are thrust upon the pumping kuduro of Luanda, the free-thinking crackled electronica of Cairo, afro-jazz from Lagos or the Sheng street-slang of Kenyan rap.

An album launch show will take place in Berlin at Ritter Butzke on 7th November featuring 23 of the producers involved in the project.

Fantasma, the latest project of South African innovator and creative pioneer Spoek Mathambohave unveiled a new song from their forthcoming EP and announced details of their first ever UK headline show at the 100 Club in London on 18th November.

Premiered via Dummy Mag, 'Eye of The Sun' features South African artist Moonchild on vocals. The 'Eye of The Sun' EP will be released via Soundway records on 10th November.

DJ Rashad was and still is a legend.  Not only was he a Footwork and Juke pioneer but also one of the hardest working DJs and producers I've ever met.  The dude really never stopped working.  He was either globetrotting and spreading the sound of Chicago around the world or in the lab pushing himself to expand his sound further and further.  On April 26 2014 the world lost one of the most inspiring and talented artists of our time.  His spirit moves through Teklife, the dancers, his friends and everyone he has touched or influenced.

Over the past few years I've been lucky enough to collaborate with Rashad and even be remixed by him.  The tracks were never completely finished and seemed impossible to finish after he passed.  Eventually I mustered up enough courage to open the sessions and finish them.  It is what Rashad would have wanted me to do.  

"Movin' Forward" is a collection of those collaborations plus two exclusive unreleased Machinedrum tracks that were heavily inspired by Rashad and the Teklife crew.  I called it "Movin' Forward" because I know Rashad wants everyone he touched to keep pushing themselves and follow in his footsteps on the path he had been creating all these years.  I'm proud to have known him, shared the stage with him and to have collaborated with him.  May his sound and spirit continue to inspire and spread through everyones speakers!  Teklife to tha next life!!

Understand is the first track off of 'Movin' Forward',  out on Friday April 24th. 100% proceeds will go to his family and estate.

Past is prologue. The sins of the father are visited on sons and daughters. The madness of the world only abates when you stop the cycle—when you seek something beyond the mono-cultural and the corporeal. 

Georgia Anne Muldrow is a seeker and truth-teller. The words on her first rap album—produced entirely by Chris Keys—balance a beautiful delivery with brutal honesty. These are the honest confessions of a mother who refuses to turn a blind eye to immediate and ancestral misdeeds. Her rhymes are conscious, but more importantly, they speak to our deeper conscience. 

The prophetic soul artist offers a singular voice, yet belongs to a storied lineage. Listening to this record, you can hear the echoes of past oracles: Billie Holiday, Alice Coltrane, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill. But the wisdom and narrative reflect Muldrow’s most personal revelations. 

From the album’s inception, we find her analyzing the patterns of her life in the constellations, rambling down dusty trails, pledging to jot down these crystalline thoughts in her mind as a north star for the misguided youth. She holds her head high, not in the vein of superiority, but as someone who “used to roam wild on a one-way street.”

The evils of the world are given no quarter. She indicts corporate thugs and warmongers, the shamelessly materialistic and musicians who refuse to offer a modicum of substance. Her motivation isn’t to brow beat, but to challenge you to do better—it’s the type of record that can trigger resolutions on any day of the year. It’s a document of racial solidarity and pride, but one that offers an olive branch to anyone down for the cause. 

The beats are dusty and suffused with warmth so overwhelming it practically radiates Vitamin D. The gritty drums and hypnotic loops are minimal enough to let Muldrow’s mineral-rich voice fill in the gaps. There’s a timelessness in it’s questioning of age-old human problems, yet it tailors the inquiries towards the issues we currently grapple with on a diurnal basis. 

Muldrow uses music as a vessel to inspire hope and propel people towards a better future. Beyond identifying worldly inequities, this record details one woman’s quest to improve things for herself, her children, and everyone else. It’s about finding universal truths, while staying true to one’s essence—transcending the hate and slowly starting to heal.
