Taking you back to some of the golden years of house music – from 1992 to 1995. Our collective Groove Ascension from West London made it down to the South Coast for our first party by the sea and we loved it!

The night was to celebrate the birthday of an old mate DJ SimonAM, reflecting a time when we were both living in Sheffield and spending every penny we had on records :)

On a much more commercial tip than my normal bag, I enjoyed digging out some classics to get the party started as they say. Featuring tracks from K-Klass, SIL, Helicopter, E-Lustrious, Slo Moshun and More Kante and many more – plus a few re-edits of classics that went down really well near the end - the big ones being by Cassim and the Prodigy

The utopian promise of social media connecting the globe on the basis of common understanding of human worth was a noble and enchanting proposition.  If “sunlight is the best disinfectant”, then having more engagement should have allowed the truth to rise to the top.  But we’re painfully realizing that the more appropriate quote describing our situation is “a lie can run half-way around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes”.  As long as algorithms don’t perfectly align with the ideals of human flourishing, consumers and creators alike will fall deeper into the feedback loop of audience capture until we reach critical mass, causing our civil societies to erupt, then collapse.  There is still time to course correct, but we must learn from our mistakes before we become totally distracted by the looming revolution in A.I.

Vulnerability. 

It’s a quality we often search for in art, but is an emotional state we desperately try to avoid in our personal lives. V/M/m represents both sides of this coin, in both its themes and in its creation. The tracks were recorded nearly 10 years ago when Veronika Coassolo and Macro/micro (Tommy Simpson) sonically explored fragility, loss, tenderness and melancholy in a very personal way. While feeling excited about the tracks on their own, unhealthy impulses of the monkey-mind badgered Tommy with thoughts like “does this fit within the aesthetic of Macro/micro?”, or “have I done enough musically to support these beautiful vocals?”. Paralyzing self doubt pushed these tracks deeper and deeper into hard drive archives until they were nearly forgotten, until thankfully, a mentally different Tommy Simpson rediscovered them in 2025. One advantage of aging is becoming more comfortable in your own skin, less neurotic of life’s decision-tree of limitless possible outcomes, and thankfully, in this case, acceptance of the vulnerability that made these songs spacial to begin with. While the tracks may be a time capsule, their emotional valence is evergreen.

Review: 

62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.
