"Perché Dormiamo?" First DEMO version. Composed in the evening between the 5th and the 6th o January (probaly). The Piano sound was probably a Quicktime MIDI system sound. 

The title of the track came to me in the summer of 2006 at the Natural History Museum in London, looking at  a shrine with the reproduction of a small dinosaur portrayed in the act of sleeping.

The question that arose kept running through my head like a melancholy riddle throughout my stay in London.  "Why do we sleep? Why do we sleep? Why do we sleep? Why do we sleep? ..."

I finished the piece in January 2020, but still couldn't get an answer.

Splendor Solis ("The Splendour of the Sun") is a version of the illuminated alchemical text attributed to Salomon Trismosin. This version dates from around 1582.

The earliest version, written in Central German, is dated 1532–1535 and is part of the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin collection at the State Museums in Berlin. It is illuminated on vellum, with decorative borders like a book of hours, meticulously painted and highlighted with gold. The later copies in London, Kassel, Paris and Nuremberg are equally fine. Twenty versions exist worldwide.

The original of Splendor Solis, which contained seven chapters, appeared in Augsburg. In miniatures the works of Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein and Lucas Cranach were used. The author of the manuscript was considered to be the legendary Salomon Trismosin, allegedly the teacher of Paracelsus, though the name is believed to be a pseudonym. The work consists of a sequence of 22 elaborate images, set in ornamental borders and niches. The symbolic process shows the classical alchemical death and rebirth of the king, and incorporates a series of seven flasks, each associated with one of the then-known planets. Within the flasks a process is shown involving the transformation of bird and animal symbols into the Queen and King, the white and the red tincture. Although the style of the Splendor Solis illuminations suggest an earlier date, they are clearly of the 16th century.

Demo track from 2007, made with the purpose of being used for a band. The track was never finished or performed. Despite good intentions I got carried away and overdid the overdubs (a tendency I struggle to get rid of even now). I made an effort to leave everything as unaltered as possible from the 2007 mix. The only thing I was forced to add was the bass part; before there was a horrible midi placeholder and it was missing in many parts. I tried to play it the way I would have played it in 2007 and it still remains a bit naive since I am not a bass player.
The drums were made from a sample CD found at a friend's house, I don't know where they came from. It probably also has loops in it from the library of the old Apple Soundtrack Pro...

Piece composed in 2002 for the trailer of the documentary 'My Three Peaks' ('Le mie Tre Cime') by Andreas Pichler. Direction: Andreas Pichler | Animation: Nunzio Cicero, Gigi Tarantola, Tatiana and Riccardo Arena. 
Part of the piece was later used in the final cut of the documentary. This track marks my very first experience with a sampler! I used Halion software (maybe version 2) and some sample CDs for Akai lent to me by a friend.
I put it here as it was, just cleaned up a couple of clicks, also because although I kept the score I no longer have either the sounds samples or the software to open the original project...

Tre Cime (Trailer Soundtrack - 2002)

‘Floating World’ is an album by US based artist Todd Gautreau, who records as Tapes and Topographies. It was created in response to a collaboration project called Thirty-Six Views of Newland Island with British artist Jonathan S Hooper. The album follows last year’s ‘Amplitudes’ and is another entry to Todd’s discography, alongside music on labels such as Past Inside The Present, Dronarivm, Shimmering Moods and his own Simulacra Records.

Jonathan S Hooper is a mixed-media artist based in London, who works with paintings, photography, sculpture and film. Thirty-Six Views of Newland Island is an evolving multi-factorial project in which Hooper continues his exploration of ontological concepts of time and space through the landscapes of his native Cornwall. Specifically, the project focuses on a small uninhabited outcrop called Newland Island, which lies just off the Cornish coast in the Atlantic Ocean’s most westerly margins. The project’s title is inspired by Katushika Hokusai’s series of woodblock prints of Mount Fuji, drawing in Hooper’s broader interest in Japan’s artistic heritage. It also adds to the cultural connection between Cornwall and Japan first established in St Ives, in the 1920’s, through the collaboration of master potters Bernard Leach and Hamada Shoji. A collaboration that continued through much of the twentieth century.

A particularly fascinating consideration is that Mount Fuji is an instantly recognisable geographic icon, yet in contrast, Newland Island is unknown to most. This frees the project from the limits of preconception, opening up opportunities to explore further ideas of landscape, and our place within it. Through collaboration with Gautreau (who is based some 5000 miles away), Hooper sought to give creative licence to a composer, in order to encourage another viewpoint. He had first discovered Todd’s music through Elizabeth Alker’s BBC Radio 3 Unclassified programme, and subsequently reached out to invite him to work on a soundtrack, which has now become ‘Floating World’. He sent photographs of his paintings, scans of the polaroids and his studio notes; the work developed organically into a collection of nine soundscapes, in which Hooper sees as independent views of Newland Island in their own right.

Hooper will be working to share this project through galleries and installations and we felt it was apt to assign full creative control over the CD packaging design to these two artists. Todd, also a graphic designer, has pulled together some of the polaroids for the outer and inner sleeves. There is a 16 page booklet included, which contains paintings, further polaroids and text from both artists. This is also included with the digital version of this album.
