Five Panels no.1 (for Luke)

A live recording of Islands for solo 'cello and electronics from the 2014 BEAST concert series at Birmingham University with 'cellist Gregor Riddell. 

Islands is a ‘musical drama’, a story told through a fusion of styles. The concerto, symphony, acousmatic music and the song all have their part to play. Though abstract, many of the piece’s themes explore the different aspects of love - a lonely ‘needing, longing’ kind (no man is an island) becoming gradually destructive and giving way to something new, something thankful, a sense of togetherness, completeness.

Gregor and I have worked together for a number of years, presenting pieces at the Aldeburgh Festival and Faster Than Sound. For each collaboration, we have worked to build bridges between the acoustic and the electronic by always beginning with the sound of the ‘cello. By sampling a multitude of sounds from this most versatile instrument, we can construct unique electroacoustic sound-worlds for the music to inhabit, explore and transform as the piece unfolds.

The sounds used as sources are very short fragments of singing, from a recording of a male Scottish folk singer, and recordings of streams. There are no synthetic sounds, but these sources are processed a great deal, and virtually always intertwined or presented simultaneously.

Rift (2015)

A crack, split, or break in something.

Synonyms: crack, fault, flaw, split, break, breach, fissure, fracture, space, aperture…

There are a number of different meanings of Rift permeating this work. The deliberate destruction of source materials allow for the creation of gestures that permit the fracturing and breaking of the sonic space. One of the pieces principle functions is an exploration of relationships between sound and silence. The silences that punctuate the sonic canvas throughout Rift are intended to allow the listener to reflect on events in the work, and anticipate what might follow.

Rift was realized during summer 2015 in the studios of the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, Leicester, UK.

Movement I of Ridge, for solo soprano and amplified piano

On mountains in winter, spindrift is snow that is caught by a strong wind and blown off the hill in something resembling a faint cloud. It is a very beautiful thing in good weather but winter mountaineering can be extremely dangerous for the unprepared when the weather closes in. What was previously an extremely beautiful thing transforms into something extremely menacing. This piece is something of an ode to winter mountaineering. It attempts to capture both the beauty of a clear day in the mountains and the chill of the cold and the danger.

Breaking...glass

Louise Rossiter is an acousmatic composer based in Leicester, UK. Her research interests lie in acousmatic music composition and performance, acoustic ecology, silence, and expectation. She recently completed a PhD at the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, De Montfort University under the supervision of John Young and Simon Emmerson, having studied previously under Pete Stollery, Robert Dow and Robert Normandeau. 
Louise’s music has been performed and broadcast around the world. In 2012 Louise was awarded first prize in the prestigious concours d’interprétation spatialisée de L’espace du Sons in Brussels and in 2015, her work Tout Autour de la Montagne was awarded a mention in the Destellos International Composition Competition. Louise’s music is released on the Xylem record label (http://www.xylemrecords.bandcamp.com).
