Secret Stuff - "I Knew You So Briefly, You Dead Soap Dog"

Less than a year has passed since Naomi Baguley spotted Ben Lewis wearing a Perfect Pussy t-shirt in a Leeds nightclub and they began trading song ideas through phone voice memos. A first batch of ramshackle demos recorded in Lewis’ bedroom soon led to a sold-out debut show at Leeds’ Oporto, before Bruising began hosting a series of cult house parties in Hyde Park living rooms with the likes of Waxahatchee, Twin Peaks and Trust Fund. Word soon got out, and praise started coming in from the most unlikely of places – Andrew W.K, for instance and, in true fairy-tale style, Perfect Pussy’s own Meredith Graves.

Off the back of two stand-out contributions to our own Vol. 3 and Art Is Hard’s Family Portrait Pt. II earlier this year, Bruising return with their debut single ‘Emo Friends’, with a re-recording of early demo ‘Honey’ making up the AA single. Now split between Berlin and Leeds as Baguley begins a year studying abroad, the band reconvened at Suburban Home Studios in Leeds to record the single with Hookworms’ MJ. 

‘Emo Friends’ deals with the pains of helplessly watching both your own and your friends’ lives falling apart, and all that you can do to combat it is to have fun with them. Infectious guitar melodies contrast with Baguley’s softly layered cries of “I want to feel okay” before the song climaxes, in Lewis’ tongue-firmly-in-cheek words, “like the big smoocher hit at the end of an American teen movie circa 1999”. ‘Honey’, on the other hand, is a re-recording of the first song the duo wrote together, transformed from bedroom demo to straight up pop-punk hit. Baguley and Lewis try and out-do each other throughout, with floating vocals and ever-more venomous guitar lines thrown back and forth.

Pinkshinyultrablast, a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia, are set to release their second album ‘Grandfeathered’ in February 2016. 

Their debut album, ‘Everything Else Matters’, released at the beginning of 2015 was met with huge critical acclaim. Headline shows across Europe, an energetic and committed fanbase, continued support at radio – all combined to make this upcoming second record one of the most anticipated in 2016. Around the first album the band were quoted as saying “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. The vision of achieving notoriety outside of Russia has been integral to the band’s philosophy – they are very much an international band now. 

A Russian band making a shoegaze record, was seen by some, as something of a novelty. The novelty was quickly eroded, firstly by shoegaze fans who awarded the band an invaluable seal of approval, but also by the music press, who quickly realised that they were not just ‘any’ shoegaze band. This was a band with widespread appeal, an engaging front-woman and a thrilling love show. 

They’ve been compared to Lush among others. But this is no mere throwback tribute. Grandfeathered is a more experimental listen compared with the debut album, it’s the sound of a band unafraid to try new things and embrace those fine lines between visceral noise and restrained subtlety. The band saying of the new sound “The new album has been recorded and mixed much faster than the previous one. The songs have more density to them and are generally more complex.”

The band take their name from an Astrobrite album, an act who were, according to the band, instrumental in how they “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music”


Recent single ‘Kiddy Pool Dreams’ features on the album. Described by Stereogum as “A flashback to the glory days of ’90s alt-rock, which builds into thundering instrumental interludes. In between are trickling synths and echoing vocals backed by a rhythmic danceable guitar.”

If that single offers a glimpse of what to expect from the rest of the record, it’s only the smallest of hints – this is an album that consistently demonstrates diversity and eclectic ambition. Influences on this record certainly suggest a new direction for the band, Lyubov claiming “Hardcore, metal and afrobeat” were all instrumental in its formation.

Welcome to the latest USELESS EATERS installment in the Slovenly Recordings repertoire. Following the unrestrained pummel of 2014’s “Desperate Living” 7inch, and the strange cohesiveness of their “Singles: 2011-2014” collection, we present you with this stark and weird new “Temporary Mutilation” five track 10inch EP. Featuring the instrumental prowess of drummer Miles Luttrell from future Slovenly legends SCRAPER, Brendan Hagarty on bass, and recorded by Kelley Stoltz (Third Man Records fame) and mastered by Mikey Young of Australia’s TOTAL CONTROL, this release especially exemplifies singer / guitarist / leader Seth Sutton’s growth as a sonic craftsman - less concerned with “punk” as a sound while inevitably remaining PUNK, devoting himself to the development of unique noise. The title track’s skeletal arrangement and oddball meter has been embellished with haunting vibrations via phones of the saxo & xylo variety, electronic rhythmic units have been employed in “Poison Dart”, and the entirety of the EP bleeds with Sutton’s trademark horrific sci-fi imagery and aggressive riffs and delivery.

Formed on a dare in 2001, Cincinnati’s Wussy is at the forefront of New Midwestern Psychedelia. Following the release of their cult classic debut in 2005, “to certain fans of Lucinda Williams, Crazy Horse, Mekons and R.E.M., Wussy became the best band in America almost instantaneously with...Funeral Dress” (SPIN). Heralded by critics for both their songwriting and varied sonic palette, the five-piece is pleased to announce their sixth full-length Forever Sounds, due out March 4 via Shake It Records & Damnably (UK/Europe). Dubbed by SPIN as “their most challenging and densely textured to date”, the new album finds Wussy crafting raw and melodic material, exploring such themes as hauntings, false prophets, aliens, and The Big Lebowski all blanketed inside layers of noise. In anticipation for the release, Wussy has revealed the first track “Dropping Houses” on SPIN. The single will be available for download via Bandcamp and in a limited run of 7” vinyl starting January 29.

Made up of Chuck Cleaver (Ass Ponys), Lisa Walker, Mark Messerly, Joe Klug, and John Erhardt, Wussy has truly come into their own on the new album. Following the band’s first US TV appearance on CBS in 2014 and increased critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and SPIN, they headed to the studio to record Forever Sounds with renewed vigor. John Hoffman and Jerri Queen (both of Vacation), along with John Curley (Afghan Whigs) at Curley’s Ultrasuede Studios, the new team and location enabled the band to take more chances and create the sound they had always been reaching for. While their pop sensibilities remain intact, the mix and instrumentation are more reminiscent of the band’s noise-heavy live shows. The album’s ten tracks are full of hope, determination, heartbreak, deception, aliens, the supernatural, the everyday, friendship, love and second chances.

"Dropping Houses" is the first track from Wussy's sixth LP Forever Sounds  (coming out March 4, 2016). The vinyl / digital single of "Dropping Houses", which comes out next Friday, will also feature a non-album B-Side, "Folk Night at Fucky's".
