This is a remake/mix for the Metapop Challenge using vocal stems from Saiina's latest release called "Hypnotise". Saïna (pron. Sa-ee-na) is a North West London-based singer/songwriter/producer influenced by Neo-Soul, Rnb, Jazz & Hip Hop.

I recorded all the instrumentals, apart from the jazzy sax phrases. The original was very jazzy, so I energised this up a bit with a new drum kit, synth bass groove, pads and ePianos. I used Saiina's superb vocal stems. Recorded & Mixed In The Hutch Nov 2022. Ableton Live 10 / NI Kontakt / Ozone.

A new and original synth' composition for an online competition by Metapop. The brief was to create an original piece of electronic synth based music / track... anything futuristic, computer-game, electronic, doom sounding goes.

This is my entry and actually fits well under my The Android Trap collection. Whilst I love acoustic and guitar based pop/rock music... the electronic/computer based stuff is still a fascination with endless sounds to explore. It's amazing!

March of The CyberPunks

My '23 version(cover) of the classic Led Zepp' guitar powerhouse that is "Black Dog" originally released way back in 1971. Led Zeppelin, one of my all time fave rock bands discovered in the glorious summer of '76 ... actually a mate had nicked the double cassette "Physical Graffiti" from a well known chain store and we listened to it so many times in the town square under the hot sun of '76. That album woke me up musically from the tamer pop glam in the charts at the time. Glory Days!

So this was a bitch to get right as it has so many weird tempo and time changes. Apparently, a deliberate ploy of the band to make it harder to copy. Still that is what the musical grid and note fractions are for. That and modern recording techniques allow for more trial and error takes. (But in the days of tape, for sure harder). I am particularly happy with my drum track here. yes, it's midi programmed but I studied the original track / drum score a lot to get the fills and grooves as close as I could. Onward....

Kiss Me Deadly

It's BIG, loud and involved... with classical overtones using the E Harmonic Minor (unusual for a rock track). Please listen on good speakers, volume as high as you can stand it!

It was complicated to learn and record, a real challenge for a home studio. But finally, after about 4 weeks of trial and error, here is my cover of the EPIC eight-minute track from the acclaimed album 'Rainbow Rising' as made famous by Richie Blackmore's Rainbow (former guitarist of Deep Purple). Richie teamed up with an awesome rock vocalist, Ronnie James Dio, and renowned rock drummer Cozy Powell after leaving Deep Purple. What a band. This is the standout track from the album. Sadly, this line-up didn't last too long.

I remember being blown away when I first heard the original 40 + years ago. 

I deliberately took this on to improve my playing and as a study in powerhouse rock with classical overtones. Little did I know how hard it was to learn all the parts. I put some hours into this and gave up a few times trying to get the sounds and arrangements right. Thankfully, I found a great vocal stem to use... quite close to Dio's, which encouraged me to continue.

Starting with the drums... these took about 4 days on and off to study and program. Without these sounding good, there was no point in learning the rest. Epic drums for sure. Love em. 

The bass and organ were fairly straightforward... then the guitars!! 

Richie is a rock guitar god... this track has a 41 bar guitar solo !!! Ahhh. Most songs have 8 bars. This was a challenge too far for me. Over a 2 week period I practised this, but some parts were just too fast for my old fingers, rather than difficult. Many of the 16th triplets and 32th notes foxed me for ages. I decided to record it in sections, break it down. So I got it to work best I could. I never got a take all the way through without making errors. I also forsook the slide guitar part. 

Interestingly, I couldn't find any live footage of Richie B actually playing the guitar solo, note for note, off the record! Maybe it was too hard for him to play in one take?

So, like the Pros, the solo is a composite of various takes in order to get a good version.

Anyway, it's done and I'm extremely happy with the final result.

A Rock/Synth Version. The progressive rock group, ELP, did an adaption of Aaron Copland's "Fanfare" composition in 1977, the record reaching No. 2 in the UK pop music chart. ELP would often mix classical themes with rock instrumentation. A great band. Here is my version ... just for fun. Loved making it. A great tune. Turn it up.

The shock death of #davidbowie  prompted many to revisit his awesome back catalogue. The media and web were overwhelmed with tributes, eulogies and music replays. I well remember the 70's hit #jeangenie as part of the Glam Rock era. Despite a simple E major riff, it had a catchy rant and chorus hook with typical bizarre lyrics from Bowie.

So here I present my demo and more electronic version of Jean Genie I renamed "New York's a Go-Go". It's a mixture of pop rock & synth styles. This second remix uses a vocal stem courtesy of the brilliant JamKazam.com. All beats, bass and musical parts are created by me in Ableton Live 9, real guitars, a Reloop midi keys and use Native Instrument synths and FX.

The pure pop icon that is #KylieMinogue had a global hit with this EDM Style dance track. As much as I detested it on release (not a KM fan) I have come to realise it is pure pop genius. It's hard to ignore that infectious hook, simple loop structure & it is well produced. The title fits perfectly. Of course having Kylie do the track with that provocative video... well it just could not fail.

Thoughts: So I though I'd try something a little more modern, for me at least. As a rocker, this is not in my comfort zone but I enjoyed making the track using mainly EDM sounds. Plus, I wanted a way to try out my new NI A49 keyboard. I pretty much tried to recreate the track as the hit to learn more about midi electronic music production. Yep I learned a lot and I can already see where I need to re-work and the potential of virtual instruments. The vocal stem is courtesy of Karaoke Version, which is not far off Kylie's version I think.

Can't Get You Out Of My Head

A flash-bang-wallop version of Tchaikovsky's Sugar Plum Fairy featuring the 'Trash Can Drum Kit', (percussion recorded from the street).

OK, The Sugar Plum rebelled ... she put on some DM boots, ditched her too-good-to-be-true persona and stomped around the trash cans, junk yards and street furniture making a heavy racket!

So this experimental track is based around Tchaikovsky's Sugar Plum Fairy theme. It started life as a series of street sounds recorded on my Zoom H1 digital recorder and processed in Audacity to make the Trash Can Drum Kit! 

So listen out for the "bass kick" from the trash bin and the crunched autumn leaves for the snare/clap and then keys rattling, bus stop poles, a coat zipper, wire fence scrapes, bin clanks, beach pebbles and door slams! Then all overdubbed with FXs and a heavy brass/string performance of the iconic "Sugar Plum" dance theme.... this is a demo only! LIKE IT? ... then hit the heart icon.

Based on the popular BBC "Sherlock" series this is one of the main musical themes used. I challenged myself to create something orchestral and this 8 bar melody fitted the bill. It is purely for experimental and learning purposes in arranging 8 to 10 different instruments such as piano, strings and wind. I am quite happy with the end result, particularly in changing the tempo and feel with every loop.

It's a very cold winter in the Northern Hemisphere as I write. The news is full of bitter hardship stories as the snow flutters down... so I think that was the first influence of this theme. After a working title of "The First Snowfall" this progressed with a "twangy guitar" melody which gave it a Spaghetti Western sound. So my thoughts turned to Native Indians and Cowboy movies... Anyway "Apache Winter" seemed to fit this cinematic style theme.

A short cover of the classic Deep Purple song made to accompany a video on YouTube (link below). This started as purely a self-indulgent jam really as i tried out my new NI A49 keyboard and virtual instruments. I liked the rock organ sound (a la John Lord). OK, I realise to attempt to sing or play anything like Deep Purple's mega talented band members is of course futile, the Rock Gods that they are! But I love the song's blues feel and still love the band.

This is my EDM-ish take on the classic Queen stadium rocker "We Will Rock You". There are quite a few Freddie Mercury vocal stems around... so I included his real vocal on here. What a voice!

I am a big fan of the early Queen stuff from the 70's after discovering them on "The Old Grey Whistle Test (BBC TV) before they were famous. Such awesome musicians and performers. And how can you not like the simple beat and rhythmic lyrics of this party song. Hail Freddie, Hail Queen! And because of that beat it lends itself to many interpretations.

So this is my rock riff version of the classic Queen stadium rocker "We Will Rock You" featuring the original Freddie Mercury vocal stem. What a voice!

How can you not like the stomp and clap groove and rhythmic lyrics of this great track. Hail Freddie, Hail Queen!  Such awesome musicians and performers. I do prefer the earlier Queen albums from the 70's (pre-pop charts). My fave album is Queen II... incredible music.

Well as you know Torvil and Dean iced danced perfectly to Maurice Ravel's Bolero to win the Olympic Gold over 30 years ago. I am no big Ice Skating fan but when you see and hear perfection it's human nature to be in awe of such skill and art. Of course the choice of music was well considered. It's emotive, sets a scene and builds to a crescendo even though it's a very slow 3/4 tempo.

In a mad impulse and with time to spare, I studied this music years ago just to see what made this Bolero so emotive. I downloaded the score and tried playing the parts on guitar or synth. It soon dawns on you how this is a brilliant study of looping a main melodic line into a theme, as does a lot of classical music. And then building it in orchestral layers to make it less repetitive, give new flavours and of course make it emotional. 

The choice of instruments in the arrangement, that continuous 16th triplet snare pattern, the simplest of C & G bass lines and that discord in its scales over the main chords to build intensity is a musical education and intriguing. Pure Genius!

Of course most modern popular music now uses looped patterns in almost a "cut & paste" way in a typical ABABCAB structure. And then uses layers and FXs, vocals and lead breaks to add variety over the repeated sequence. It works... we love that even more if there is a "hook". 

Ravel's Bolero has that melodic hook moving from a major to eastern sounding minor scales that entices me and sounds exotic. It's repeated over 13 times !!! (depending on which version you listen to).

So why I am wittering on about this? Well for years I harboured a desire to try and do a version myself even though it was overwhelming for an average musician like myself. Whilst, I realise I can't be that real organic orchestra live at the Albert Hall, with the new digital technology I think I can now give it go! We have the stop/start recording techniques, great sounding virtual instruments and indeed "cut & paste" options! 

And that desire has been on/off for a few years now but lately it's been haunting me to finish. It's a personal goal in orchestration, fun and an experiment in how far I have come in home studio production. Plus, I wanted to incorporate my guitars and my "trash can drum kit" (used in my Sugar Plum Fairy rendition) to give this almighty classical piece a new edge! A kind of "Bolero for Group and Orchestra" like Deep Purple did way back. Maybe too ambitious?

Will I finish it? Well that's the intention but it's proving tricky in parts... Why can't I keep things simple?

To be honest, most music is simple at its core but that "pizzaz and power" is when the experts add those skilled nuances, energy, performance "X", harmonic arrangements and excellent music theory to take it all up many notches.

We'll have to wait and see how this turns out. ;-)

Err!! Well what happened here? What started as a short gentle Bansuri flute tune ended up a full-on cinematic style instrumental. Going from a tranquil slow heart beat drum & flute building to the loud crescendo dance outro, this certainly surprised me. 

I think it is loosely based on trad' Indian/Asian meditation/folk music I had used to relax during the worse Covid period. It is an alien genre to me but did the trick. In my vast collection of virtual instruments was an arsenal of Indian/Asian sounds. I particularly liked the Bansuri (Bamboo Flute) and the basic tune came very quick. I can expand on that I thought!

Well a week later, this is the result! I threw the "kitchen sink" at it to get texture and variation. If you listen carefully you may hear whale sounds, Sitar, Tabla (bongo like drums), rain and thunder, strings (BBC Orchestra), distorted guitar.. even that bass drum is a detuned metal pipe sample!

It was certainly a labour of love... did I create something good? Let me know what you think. Feedback is more than welcome.

A composition based on the Cremona Quartet instruments (Bass, Cello, Violins) as part of a remix challenge. I particularly like the "epic" Timpani / Horns section at 1.30.

This track got under my skin as A) I want to learn more about classical orchestration and B) I wanted something BIG in the middle!

I have recently acquired the BBC Symphony Orchestra Discovery Pack (by Spitfire Audio). Weaving this into the Cremona melodies was the goal. I used the original string stems as a theme but re-recorded them all.

Not sure if it's really that good, but I am proud of how far I have come in producing music and put a lot of effort into this. Probably the hardest track I have done to date!  Still, it's done now and I can take what I learned to more projects, so a win-win for me.

WELCOME - SO GLAD YOU CAME.
This is my muso' home, a sanctuary, a creative cauldron of musical ideas, covers, new stuff, original and maybe sometimes off-centre. Even a few surprises as I go where my changing musical interest goes. I am a hobby producer and musician. Those 12 notes are still fascinating me.

If nothing else, this is first and foremost, for my own greater good, to ease a wary soul, shield me from the slings and arrows of modern life. So, keeping me from insanity in a broken world.

Enough rambling, I'll let the chords and the melodies do my talking.
