Jan Lubahn aka 'Mad Lubi' grew up in the far north and moved to Berlin a few years ago out of love for music. There he works for a big record store, regularly spinning at various venues, most often and preferably at Arkaoda. In the past he has hosted several event series, organized and played festival stages, collaborated with great labels like Philophon and in his spare time he is constantly on the lookout for black gold. For almost a year now, he and his partner have been producing a monthly radio show on Cashmere Radio: 'The Endless Tape Machine'.

"This mix called 'Nature Boy' meanders through my music collection, from the great love jazz, to ethno and exotic vibes to Latin America, to Jamaica to Southeast Asia to folk. The name of the mix has been floating around in my head for a while, firstly because it fits the podcast photo and secondly because it's one of my favorite songs for a long time. In this mix, nature is often sung about, discussed. You can hear an instrumental version of this song in the podcast."

When the island was hit by an enormous heat wave at the end of the 60s, legend has it that the fast ska beat developed into a more slow-going sound - rocksteady. What we all associate with the style reggae was to follow a little later. In this issue we play almost exclusively tunes from the defining sound systems and labels of this period - Prince Buster, Studio One / Coxsone & Treasure Isle.

'Harry Smith's Complete Anthology of American Folk Music', published in 1952 on the Smithsonian Folkways label, presents an extensive research and collection on the history of US folk music from the southern states from 1926-1942, which continues to inspire musicians and artists today.

Harry Smith, a formative figure in the New York beat scene of the 1950s, understood music as a spiritual contemporary witness to the relationship between people and their lives. He was not interested in the distinction between elitist blues and lowbrow hilbilly that was common at the time. He wanted the listeners to feel the beauty of the music and discover it for themselves individually.

Calypso is the music of the Caribbean carnival, whose history dates back to the 18th century. Spanish colonial powers brought their form of carnival, European musical influence and African slaves to the Caribbean islands. As the slaves were excluded from the celebrations of the European settlers, they established their own carnival.  Calypso emerged from the musical fusion of Caribbean battle songs, European musical elements and the slaves' political and social expression of opinion.

Library Music - the sound for film, radio, advertising, trailers and jingles. From orchestral formations to avant-garde sound sequences, endless worlds of sound are created. The era of library music began with the sound film. It was first produced in 1927 by the former sheet music publisher De Wolfe Music. The 60s and 70s were the heyday of these productions and a number of labels were established. Since the LP's were mainly recorded for the archives of radio stations, many original recordings are rare collector's items today.

In this label special, we are focussing on releases from the Jazz and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues label Cadet Records. A sub-label of the independent label Chess Records from Chicago. Founded in the 1950s, Chess Records set the trend for the development of Rhythm and Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll and is still one of the most important Blues labels today. The success of the label and its sub-labels is due to the fact that they signed musicians and released records that were not the focus of the major labels. They thus offered the artists a space for free musical development. Among the main protagonists who have released on Cadet Records are Ahmad Jamal, James Moody, Dorothy Ashby, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection and many others.

In this edition, we travel to Ghana, one of our favourite countries for African music. We focus on the 1970s, a very productive phase in the Ghanaian music scene, which at the time was hardly known outside Ghana. Unfortunately, the hopes of many artists for lucrative record deals from abroad were not fulfilled. The only exception is Hedzoleh Soundz, who released their debut album through their collaboration with Hugh Masekela on the American label Blue Thumb. Fortunately, many of these forgotten artists received the recognition they deserved in the wake of the Afro-Funk revival in the early 2000s.

In these days Africa often seems to be forgotten in the western world, so this could be a right kind of message to keep in mind. In the fourth edition Mad Lubi from Berlin takes you on a stunning journey through africa. Harambee means in swahili that people should stick together. It‘s included as well on the emblem of Kenya. In the mix next to Kenya we take a visit to Togo, Tanzani, Zambia, Ethiopia, Somalia, Mali, Kenya, Benin, South Africa and Burkina Faso. Beside all the old tunes there‘s one current tune of the ever brilliant Philophon label included. Try to figure it out!

DJ Mad Lubi, based in Berlin, is resident-DJ at 'Panke Culture' and belongs to the Kreyol crew, one of the Berlin sound systems for Afro-Tropical music.

With his companion Nicoslav Nachhall he's hosting the event 'eclectic culture'. They're searching for vinyl treasures around the world and presenting a never-ending selection of music free from the limitation of genre. They invited extraordinary DJ's like Fog Puma, menqui, Nomad, esclé, Eli Pavel, Futte Rico, Hugo Mendez, Sigourney Skywalker to name a few. He's hosting his own events for nearly 20 years now, co-hosted a festival stage for two years and played gigs from Copenhagen to Istanbul. 

Magïc Müllï is always on the run to discover and create new forms of texture, patterns and rhythm in photography, textiles and music.

According to the Maya, each human being is born with two souls. One of them is known as the uxlab. It is invested in the body and in breathing. It remains within the body until the moment of our death.

The second aspect of the soul is quite different. Sometimes the Maya use the word nawal to describe this aspect of the soul. The nagual is not vested in the body, but can roam freely through astral and spiritual realms, which is what it does while we are sleeping. In its travels, it may meet and interact with the wandering naguales of others, whether humans, animals, plants or even minerals. From such interactions are our dreams fashioned and created.

While all living things possess a nagual or spiritual essence, the nagual of a human being differs from that of other sentient beings. Our nagual may be more accurately called uwach uk’ij, which, in the K’iche’ language, literally means “the face of his or her day.” In other words, this is the energy template or imprint of the Sacred Calendar day upon which we are born. Our day-sign soul is our nagual, our spiritual essence, our archetypal imprint. And this is the soul which dreams.
