'The Endless Tape Machine' - a monthly live radio show at Cashmere Radio curated by Magïc Müllï and Mad Lubi. Inspired by the analogue tape machines we used to push our first tapes back and forth many years ago.  

We explore music history from then to now, around the globe:
From occult sounds to the avant-garde, from exotic adventures to political statements, from cotton field blues of the 20s to acid house of the 90s. 
Each episode is dedicated to a theme, an artist, a country, a current, a label, a style, a word....

In the history of music, the drumset initially functioned in the background of the band setting as a framing and space-creating rhythm instrument. In the 50s and 60s, drummers liberated their playing and developed their own interpretations with which they created individual moments of tension and thus allowed the drums to come to the fore as a melody instrument. This development reached its peak in the late 60s, when many progressive and psychedelic rock bands integrated sprawling drum solos into their songs. We introduce you to pioneering drummers such as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, Ginger Baker and Mike Clark.

As the musician Mathew Halsall was unable to find a suitable label for his releases, he founded his own music label 'Gondwana Records' in Manchester in 2008. The label is now regarded as the nucleus of the young jazz scene in Manchester and is home to musicians from the UK, Belgium, Poland, USA, Australia and Scandinavia, among others. This results in an exciting contemporary spectrum of spiritual meditative jazz, neo-classical and ambient-electronic crossover. We introduce you to some of the label's artists and projects: Chip Wickam, GoGo Penguin, Mammal Hands, Paradise Cinema, Sunda Arc, Hania Rani, ...

The British label 'Planet Dog' is regarded as a pioneer of electronic music, innovative ambient, techno, breakbeat and psychedelic trance. The story begins with a club and the free festival scene of the acid house movement of the 1980s. As a free-space counterpart to the established, strict and rigid London clubs, Michael and Bob organised an indoor festival that developed into a free and colourful cosmos for a diverse cultural scene with music, cabaret, film, art, performance and much more. In 1985, the 'Planet Dog' club opened from this playground. A psychedelic club with expansive, imaginative decoration and an indescribable atmosphere. With the intention of offering the musicians who played in the club a platform, the 'Planet Dog' label was founded in 1993. The main focus here was on the platform concept for the artists and not marketing DJ-friendly formats. The main protagonists included Eat Static, Banco de Gaia, Timeshard, Children of the Bong and Future Loop Foundation.

We begin with almost 100-year-old songs by Khansahib Abdul Karim Khan, briefly touch on the infinite expanses of Indian classical music, look for the connection to jazz with T.K. Ramamoorthy, The Braz Gonzalves Seven, among others, and dance our way through film music between Bollywood and Kollywood to the disco sound of the 80s with composers R.D. Burman and Ilaiyaraaja.

In this programme, we mainly look at lesser-known artists in American soul music, most of whom only released a few singles. Due to the mass of recordings and the supremacy of the major labels such as Motown from Detroit, Stax from Memphis, Atlantic from New York or Chess from Chicago, many great artists faded into the background. They disappeared from the scene after just a few recordings and lived a life away from show business. We dedicate this programme to them.

Calypso is the music of the Caribbean carnival, whose history dates back to the 18th century. Spanish colonial powers brought their form of carnival, European musical influence and African slaves to the Caribbean islands. As the slaves were excluded from the celebrations of the European settlers, they established their own carnival.  Calypso emerged from the musical fusion of Caribbean battle songs, European musical elements and the slaves' political and social expression of opinion.

Library Music - the sound for film, radio, advertising, trailers and jingles. From orchestral formations to avant-garde sound sequences, endless worlds of sound are created. The era of library music began with the sound film. It was first produced in 1927 by the former sheet music publisher De Wolfe Music. The 60s and 70s were the heyday of these productions and a number of labels were established. Since the LP's were mainly recorded for the archives of radio stations, many original recordings are rare collector's items today.

On our trip to Morocco this year, we found various singles from the Moroccan labels Boussiphone, Koutoubiaphone, Kadriphone, Atlassiphone and Casaphone. Like other labels such as Orikaphone, Kawakibphone or Moussaouiphone, they originate from Casablanca, the city that developed into the center of record production in the country after Moroccan independence in 1956. Here, in the 1950s and 1960s, local independent labels released hundreds of singles with regional music from all over the country - from artists from remote mountain regions to the big cities.  The music they brought with them and their history inspired us to create this program.

We have both been lovers of progressive rock music for a long time. By trying to categorise many of these progressive bands into the genre of 'progressive rock', however, the concept of progressive quickly becomes obsolete, as it harbours the danger that musicians begin to copy the newly invented formulas, which is well described by the following view of Robert Fripp, musician of the band King Crimson: 'He sees progressive rock less as a stringent style than as an attitude. It is characterised by the will to redefine the stylistic and conceptual boundaries of rock music using procedural processes from classical music and jazz. At the point at which a new structure of conventions of his own style had developed from this attitude, he considered the progressive character to be obsolete and ended his activities within the genre for the time being. This happened in 1974, when the first incarnation of the genre was still in its commercial prime.' So for this programme, without paying too much attention to this classification, we present progressive rock music from England, Belgium, France and the USA from 1967 to 1981

In this label special, we are focussing on releases from the Jazz and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues label Cadet Records. A sub-label of the independent label Chess Records from Chicago. Founded in the 1950s, Chess Records set the trend for the development of Rhythm and Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll and is still one of the most important Blues labels today. The success of the label and its sub-labels is due to the fact that they signed musicians and released records that were not the focus of the major labels. They thus offered the artists a space for free musical development. Among the main protagonists who have released on Cadet Records are Ahmad Jamal, James Moody, Dorothy Ashby, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection and many others.
