TONY ALLEN

Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa’s finest kit drummer and one of the continent’s most influential musicians. His playing draws on four different styles – highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) Allen co-created Afrobeat - the hard driving, horns rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style which became such a dominant force in African music and such an influence worldwide.

Tony Allen’s latest release ‘Secret Agent’, is a majestic slice of hardcore roots Afrobeat, and is Allen's debut for World Circuit, his first release since he became a founder member of The Good The Bad and The Queen (alongside Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon and Simon Tong). his recent work has included also the collaboration with Finnish maverick Jimi Tenor for Strut's Inspiration Information series. Afrobeat is currently enjoying an upsurge of interest and for fans of hip-hop, funk and jazz, Allen, holder of the Afrobeat flame, is today revered as its seminal living figure.

"A REIMAGINATION OF AN OLD MIX THAT NEVER SURFACED.

SPACE, INTRIGUE AND TENDERNESS WERE THE CENTRAL THEMES DRIVING THIS MIX. THESE ARE CERTAINLY THE KEY FEELINGS I DREW UPON WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO COMPILE THE TAPES WHICH EVOLVED INTO MY EARLY RADIO SHOWS.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE I FACED WAS FIGHTING THE TURBULENT ENERGY THAT UNDERLIES THE CLUB SETS I'VE BEEN PLAYING SO MUCH OF RECENTLY. It's been a while since we updated the Forecast as we've been a tad busy sorting out pressing-plant-fuck-ups and rolling about an English wood over the past few weeks. We're happy to have Doppelate break the silence with this immersive mix. Apparently recorded on a quiet Caribbean island, the London based producer/DJ has pieced together a really quite lovely selection of songs for you to sink into. We reckon if a Lava Lamp could have a taste in music it'd be right keen on this one.
