Kid Fonque has become a vital part of South African electronic music and club culture over the last 20 years. Uniquely accomplished in both influence and scope, he is an over-achiever in every one of his roles; DJ, Producer Label Owner, promoter and more recently, Radio Presenter.

Firmly established as a tastemaker in South Africa, Kid Fonque’s influence can be felt and heard in the music of the many artists he has helped nurture with his role as label manager of Africa’s seminal dance label Soul Candi Records and now his new venture with Jullian Gomes in their new label Stay True Sounds.

Kid Fonque’s talent is the type that refuses to acknowledge boundaries of any kind – be they genres or borders. The respect he is paid by the industry is a result of his no compromise attitude to playing and making music. Rather than following trends, Kid Fonque has always done things his own way. Importantly, every record he reaches for bares all the hallmarks of the Kid Fonque sound - a golden thread that ties all his sets together somehow. 

Like a painter dabbing his brush into different hues, Fonque’s palette embraces everything from bass and broken beats to bossa nova, hip hop and every shade of house - and with this open-minded approach, he’s been deconstructing dancefloors at home and abroad for well over a decade. Over the last couple years he’s played dates in Hong Kong, Dubai, the UK and Switzerland.

Kid Fonque has just recently started his own radio show called Selective Styles on South Africa’s very own 5FM.  Selective Styles has given Kid the platform to showcase the hidden talent from all over South Africa electronic, house, soul & Hip Hop Community while delving into international releases weekly.

In 2011, Kid Fonque launched his long-running monthly night, #2SIDESOFTHEBEAT as a platform to showcase underground music from all genres at the same venue. Dubstep and house rubs shoulders with hip hop, broken beat and everything in between. Kid Fonque handpicks the line-up which has seen esteemed musos like Dego, King Britt, Swindle, Mala, Nightmares On Wax, Zaki Ibrahim and local stars like Jullian Gomes, Cuebur, Kenzhero and The Brother Moves On all on one stage.

In 2014 Kid Fonque moved into the producer’s chair and released his critically acclaimed debut artist album Kid Fonque and Friends and a string of remixes. 

Two singles from the album “BE”, “Usangikhumbula” and a recent collaboration with D-Malice “All This Time” did serious damage in the charts – all claiming the number 1 spot on the YFM Urban Top 20. His recent studio output has paired him with luminaries like Clara Hill, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Nia Andrews, Jonny Miller,  Kev Brown, Okmalumkoolkat and Atjazz. 

2016 has been music as usual and the year started with a Boiler Room set where he was asked to represent his newfound label ‘Stay True Sounds’ and got to share the platform with label partner Jullian Gomes with a back-to-back set recorded and played in Cape Town’s Langa.

2017 sees plenty of new projects on the horizon for Fonque including a full length collaboration with UK’s D-Malice under the alias rkls due for release on r2 London which features a rich and varied cast of artists including Kev Brown, Melo B Jones, Sio, John Robinson and many more.

Whether he’s behind the decks, running Stay True Sounds, preparing for his weekly radio show or in studio making otherworldly music, Kid Fonque’s sonic adventures continue to fill dance floors and thrill earholes, pay attention!

Bristol-based producer Sean McCabe released his first tracks in 2003 and has since fine-tuned a trademark sound that is effortlessly soulful.

McCabe made his name in house, developing a long-running relationship with legendary US garage label King Street Sounds and remixing the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Evelyn Champagne King, Carolyn Harding, Blaze, and Roland Clark. Since then he’s amassed an impressive discography, delivering inspired productions for labels like Local Talk, Strictly Rhythm, Vega Records, Tribe, and Quantize – plus an original solo album for Z Records.

A quick listen to any of his productions or one of his superb DJ sets will confirm this attractive, emotion-rich aesthetic. While rooted in house, his sound regularly takes on flavours of disco, boogie, Afro, deeper grooves, proto-house, ‘90s garage-house dubs and much more besides.

As an artist, his 2014 debut album entitled ‘It’s Time’ on Z Records displays his musical range and versatile quality production skills. The album hit Number 1 on Traxsource in its first week and has received support from the likes of Solar Radio, Mi-Soul, Kiss FM, and Jazz FM.

As a DJ, he forged a reputation at the legendary Southport Weekender, where he performed regularly. Anyone who can impress the notoriously knowledgeable Southport Weekender crowd must be doing something right. Sean has also travelled the world, playing as far afield as Asia and South Africa, as well as regular appearances across Europe and the UK. Refreshingly, he seems to have no particular aspirations to play in gargantuan clubs, and admits to preferring gigs in small, intimate venues, where he can make a connection with the crowd.

As a producer, McCabe is constantly learning and evolving, taking his sound in different directions. He admits to a love of vintage synthesizers – picked up from listening to classic New York boogie and ‘80s soul. In 2016, Sean continued his musical journey by launching ‘Good Vibrations Music’ record label – a natural evolution of his renowned Good Vibrations events in Bristol.

With a successful album under his belt, his own record label and notable collaborations with the likes of Karizma, Turbojazz, and DJ Spen, his reputation for bringing quality soulful dance music to the masses continues to rise.

Accomplished DJ and label owner, 2Lani The Warrior, typifies a new generation of talented twenty-first century South African electronic dance music creatives.  His approach to track selection, whether building a DJ set in real time or discovering tunes for release on his labels, draws heavily on diverse musical influences. Formative years spent in the warm embrace of the finest jazz, soul and reggae tunes, alongside more locally-originating sounds, lends 2Lani’s work an uncommon richness and eclecticism.  The common thread linking everything is the man’s desire to transmit emotion from recording to audience.

It’s easy to discern 2Lani’s musical heritage and fastidious approach to curation, both in his sophisticated DJ performances and in the catalogue of releases on Do It Now Recordings, Music Basket and DeepStitched.  The results of his lifelong quest to showcase great music are particularly evident in the intelligent, almost unconscious, melding of musical forms found in 2Lani’s live performances.  Recent critically acclaimed cameos for Mixmag’s The Lab series and another appearance in Johannesburg for the respected Boiler Room brand, attest to his enduring high status in the deep soulful house underground.  2Lani’s regular guest mixes for Los Angeles-based taste-maker Lars Behrenroth’s legendary weekly Deeper Shades of House show are further testimony to the esteem in which he is held among the global house cognoscenti. 2Lani is recognised for thoughtfully constructed and uniquely moving DJ sets, and while deeply rooted in his proud African heritage, his music choices are outward-looking and accessible to the most discerning worldwide audiences. RADIO ELECTRONICA was one of the first independent radio programmes to go on air in Jena in 1999. The background was to bring colour into the dreary Thuringian radio programme and to create a platform where regional and national artists from the electronic music scene could present themselves and exchange ideas. RADIO ELECTRONICA claims to be always on the trail of new influences, trends and artists in the field of electronic music.

The show quickly developed from the first pre-productions to a live broadcast, which can be heard every four weeks on Saturdays from 7pm to midnight on the open channel Jena on UKW 103.4 Mhz and via online stream (https://radio-okj.de/wp-content/themes/radiookj/okj-player.html).

With a steadily growing fan base, RADIO ELECTRONICA is still a firm institution in the field of electronic music in Jena and beyond the city limits. Besides the latest scene trends and record presentations, studio guests are a big part of the show.
