Hailing from Montreal with Lebanese/Persian roots, formerly known as BiG AL, BiGz is surely one of the longest serving, globally renowned and respected Middle Eastern DJs on the planet, starting his extensive career back in 1989.

Having fallen in love with music at a very young age, his journey evolved naturally, leading him to the New York underground house sound. BiGz was among the first to import western club music and culture back to his native Lebanon where he hosted the primary radio show spoken in the English language; playing underground House Music and Disco imported from the USA and Europe. But in a civil war torn country, it was time to spread his wings and search for the source.

Arriving to the USA in the early 90’s, BiGz became a regular club kid at the Sound Factory, Red Zone, Limelight, Shelter, Tunnel, Twilo, Palladium/Arena, Arc/Vinyl and other seminal venues, soaking up sounds laid down by Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, Masters At Work, Roger Sanchez, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, Francois K. and more. 

His warm demeanor, powerhouse work-ethic and boundless talent have kept him at the epicenter of electronic music for almost three decades, with absolutely no signs of slowing down. Whether behind the decks, in the studio, touring or showcasing new artists via his networks, BiGz continues his ceaseless mission: to tell a story, educate, diffuse good vibes, be the liaison between the old-school and the contemporary while always pushing the sonic barriers to bring exceptional sound quality and music to the world.

A message from Jonathan Strange:

"Electronic music and the culture that surrounds it can at times feel like it’s exploding in scale. As digital tools become smarter and more accessible, so too does the number of creatives looking to share their passion through production and performance with varying degrees of style and complexity. The common satire here is how ‘everybody today is a DJ’ and indeed times must be very good for USB drive salesman.

But I love this, and offer another perspective. With each new artist sharing sounds unlocks a new opportunity for music discovery. For those that love music in its essence, it's the time spent away from the warehouse raves where we can often encounter our most poignant musical inspiration.

To share with you just one such story, last week I found myself alone in a small bar finishing up some work to the tune of some cold rainy weather, a whiskey and a live set performed by the bar owner. He was an unknown artist, without a Soundcloud page, playing to an otherwise entirely empty room. Whilst I learned that he produces for himself as a hobby, I was floored by his talent, the pacing and beautiful curation of his set. This was an experience I did not seek but listening entirely rebased my thinking. It offered up a new perspective to my day and, of course, drained my data allowance through the constant use of Shazam. I often reflect on those beats, the serendipitous discovery, and how at times I play them as a fellow silent and unknown musician.

For this mix, I’m giving homage to my muses by thoughtfully selecting tracks that were gifted in moments such as those above. Bestowed when least expected, these are my musical memories that bring me immense happiness to remember and replay. By binding them together in harmonic matrimony, it’s my intent to tell a story of how a single moment of inspiration - by anyone of any status - can in unison become that much greater than the sum of its parts.
