Yellow-crowned night Heron nocturnal flight call, 06:23hrs.

A few weeks before small flocks were discovered in the Algarve and southern Spain, this Rustic Bunting flew over Martinhal (Sagres), Vila do Bispo, Portugal at 06:08 in the morning. It's just the one call after a second. The other sounds are from a more distant European Robin.

Olive-backed Pipit (Anthus hodgsoni) nocturnal flight calls, Sagres, 31 Oct 2022. A recording only analysed two years late... turns out that this was a fantastic night of migration with no less that three Olive-backed Pipits passing at different times (this was the clearest one), and about ten times that many Tree Pipits. Other highlights included a very clear Bluethroat, a Ring Ouzel and a nice flock of Little Egrets. I did not count them, but the Song Thrushes must have been in four figures. Thanks as always to Geoffrey Morrison to put out the gear night after night.

This was one of at least two Black-and-white Warblers in Fojo on this day. It had been subjected to quite a lot of playback, and this coupled with the fact that there really was a 'rival' present made it very feisty and reactive. One a few occasions it actually sang, a first for an American warbler on Corvo, as far as I have been able to find out. It was difficult to get a good recording with excited birders and a film crew all capturing images and moving to get the best angle etc, but here are two of the four strophes it gave in the longest song sequence I heard.

This was the second Baltimore Oriole of the day, but we only heard it. The bird may have been reacting to a Yellow-billed Cuckoo nearby, which was occasionally calling (responding to playback).
