Eduardo Germán María Hughes Galeano (Montevideo, 3 de septiembre de 1940), conocido como Eduardo Galeano, es un periodista y escritor uruguayo, ganador del premio Stig Dagerman. Es considerado como uno de los más destacados escritores de la literatura latinoamericana.
Sus libros más conocidos, Memoria del fuego (1986) y Las venas abiertas de América Latina (1971), han sido traducidos a veinte idiomas. Sus trabajos trascienden géneros ortodoxos, combinando documental, ficción, periodismo, análisis político e historia. Niega ser un historiador:
    "Soy un escritor que quisiera contribuir al rescate de la memoria secuestrada de toda América, pero sobre todo de América Latina, tierra despreciada y entrañable". 
Galeano nació en Uruguay en el seno de una familia de clase alta y católica descendiente de españoles, ingleses y alemanes, su padre fue Eduardo Hughes Roosen y su madre Licia Esther Galeano Muñoz de quien tomó el apellido para su nombre artístico. En su juventud trabajó como obrero de fábrica, pintor, mensajero, mecanógrafo, entre otros oficios. A los 14 años vendió su primera caricatura política al semanario "El Sol" del Partido Socialista.
Comenzó su carrera de perodista a inicios de los '60 como editor de "Marcha", un semanario influyente que tuvo como colaboradores a Mario Vargas Llosa, Mario Benedetti, Manuel Maldonado, Denis y Roberto Fernández Retamar. Editó durante dos años el diario "Época". Contrajo matrimonio tres veces: la primera con Silvia Brando, con quien tuvo una hija, Verónica Hughes Brando; luego contrajo matrimonio con Graciela Berro Rovira con quien tuvo dos hijos: Florencia y Claudio Hughes Berro; de quien también se divorció casándose en terceras nupcias con Helena Villagra.
Durante sus estudios, con una beca en París, supo que Juan Domingo Perón había dicho que “si ese muchacho anda por acá, me gustaría verlo”. Galeano aprovechó un viaje para llamar al teléfono que le habían dado, aún cuando no terminaba de creer que fuese cierto. Lo era, y fue recibido muy bien. Tuvo una larga charla con el ex presidente argentino en el exilio, donde le preguntó por qué no emitía señales más seguido.
    “Perón me contestó: El prestigio de Dios está en que se hace ver muy poco”. 
En el Golpe de Estado del 27 de junio de 1973, Galeano fue encarcelado y obligado a dejar Uruguay. Su libro Las venas abiertas de América Latina fue censurado por los gobiernos militares derechistas de Uruguay, Argentina y Chile. Se fue a vivir a Argentina donde fundó el magazín cultural "Crisis".
En 1976, se casó por tercera vez, al tiempo que fue añadido a la lista de los condenados del escuadrón de la muerte de Videla, quien tomaba el poder ese año. Vuela a España, donde escribió su famosa trilogía: Memoria del fuego (un repaso por la historia de Latinoamérica), en 1984.
A inicios de 1985, Galeano retornó a Montevideo. En octubre de ese año, junto a Mario Benedetti, Hugo Alfaro y otros periodistas y escritores que habían pertenecido al semanario "Marcha", funda el semanario Brecha, del cual continúa siendo integrante de su Consejo Asesor. En 2010 Brecha instituyó el premio Memoria del Fuego, que está previsto que Galeano entregue anualmente a un creador que a sus valores artísticos sume el compromiso social y con los derechos humanos. El primer galardonado fue el cantautor español Joan Manuel Serrat, quien recibió el 16 de diciembre de 2010, en el Teatro Solís de Montevideo, la estatuilla diseñada por el escultor Octavio Podestá.
En 2004, Galeano apoyó la victoria de la alianza Frente Amplio y de Tabaré Vázquez. Escribe un artículo en el que menciona que la gente votó utizando el sentido común. En 2005, Galeano, junto a intelectuales de izquierda como Tariq Ali y Adolfo Pérez Esquivel se unen al comité consultivo de la reciente cadena de televisión latinoamericana TeleSUR.
En enero de 2006, Galeano se unió a figuras internacionales como Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Benedetti, Ernesto Sabato, Thiago de Mello, Carlos Monsiváis, Pablo Armando Fernández, Jorge Enrique Adoum, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Mayra Montero, Ana Lydia Vega y Pablo Milanés, en la demanda de soberanía para Puerto Rico. Además firmaron en la proclamación de independencia del país.
En febrero de 2007, Galeano supera una operación para el tratamiento del cáncer de pulmón. En noviembre de 2008, Galeano dijo sobre la victoria de Barack Obama:
    "La Casa Blanca será la casa de Obama pronto, pero esa Casa Blanca fue construida por esclavos negros. Y me gustaría y espero que él nunca lo olvide".
En abril de 2009, el presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez entrega una copia de "Las Venas Abiertas de América Latina" al presidente estadounidense Obama durante la 5Cumbre de las Américas, celebrada en Puerto España, Trinidad y Tobago.
En mayo de 2009, en una entrevista declaró:
    "No sólo Estados Unidos, sino algunos países europeos han sembrado dictaduras por todo el mundo. Y se sienten como si fueran capaces de enseñar lo que es democracia".
En septiembre de 2010 ganó el destacado premio Stig Dagerman, uno de los más prestigiosos galardones literarios en Suecia, entregado anualmente por la Sociedad Stig Dagerman a aquel escritor que en su obra reconoce la importancia de la libertad de la palabra mediante la promoción de la comprensión intercultural.Galeano fue distinguido con el galardón por estar "siempre y de forma inquebrantable del lado de los condenados", por escuchar y transmitir su testimonio mediante la poesía, el periodismo, la prosa y el activismo, según el jurado.”
