Through this dedication, I wish to express my gratitude to Alberto Nones, not only for his unwavering support and sincere friendship towards me, but also for the solidarity he has extended to my fellow conationals during these extremely hard times. We met at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, in Palestine, an institution where I once served as faculty and Academic Coordinator, and where he was later appointed Honorary Professor. These are the kinds of collegialities that endure.

“A Distant Lament” is a poignant musical refection on the devastating impact of war and the profound sense of helplessness and longing experienced by those separated from their loved ones. Set in the solemn landscape of Gaza, the composition unfolds as a heartfelt lament, echoing the sorrow and anguish felt by individuals torn apart by conflict.

From the opening strains, the cello’s mournful melody resonates with deep emotion, capturing the pain and longing of a soul yearning for connection amidst the chaos of war. Through haunting melodies and somber harmonies, the music paints a vivid portrait of the turmoil and suffering endured in Gaza, evoking a sense of desolation and despair.

As the piece unfolds, moments of quiet reflection give way to intense outpourings of grief and anguish, mirroring the ebb and flow of emotions experienced by those caught in the midst of conflict. The cello’s expressive phrases soar and recede, weaving a narrative of loss and resilience, as memories of home and family licker like distant stars in the night sky.

Yet, amidst the darkness, there is a glimmer of hope—a whispered refrain that speaks to the enduring power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. Through its evocative melodies and poignant harmonies, “A Distant Lament” invites listeners on a profound journey of introspection and empathy, reminding us of the universal longing for peace and reconciliation in a world torn apart by division and strife.

To Alberto Nonoes: Fragments of Memory Falling is a dialogue between presence and absence,
between what once stood and what remains. Written for cello and piano, the
piece weaves fragments of melody and silence, evoking the echoes of spaces lost
to time. Though inspired by personal recollections of family and place, it
extends beyond a single story inviting the listener to reflect on the fragile
nature of memory, home, and the voices that linger even after walls have fallen.
