Prema Swarupa

Having heard that one of my favourite books, Francine Rivers' 'Redeeming Love' is being made into a film, I thought it would be fun to write some music inspired by the book.  This piece is set to how I imagine the opening scene to be shot. As the scene opens we see Angel sitting in a carriage with Duchess, on her way to 'The Palace'.  On her lap is the crystal swan given to her by her father, which brings flashbacks to her childhood, as heard in the music box-style glockenspiel section.  The piece ends as the scene returns to the present and the bleakness of Angel's life in Pair-A-Dice.  

The Road to Pair-A-Dice

I first heard this back in Penukonda, which is a little village in South India. It was somewhere around 2009. I was walking into the Mandir (spiritual center). Meanwhile an old friend, Gustav Vigneshwara was sitting inside, writing notes, recording melodies. He played on his guitar. 

At the moment I walked in with a group of students he started singing "Om Nama Shivaya". It was so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. From that moment I kinda got hooked on the melody. I kept singing it here and there. 

One of the other tracks is closer to Gustav's original. This one is my interpretation. Not even sure if this counts as a Bhajan, as it's more like playing around with that melody, remembering that moment, connecting to that silent joy. A song for Shiva.

This year I have the amazing opportunity to be part of the Something More Academy, a course which brings together Christians in creative industries to produce content inspired by different aspects of our faith. This month was about 'Doubt' and I have written a track to portray those times when it feels like we are stuck and are going nowhere, but to say that maybe these can be times of goodness because God is always with us in the waiting.
