Summer is a season to head out on the range.  Now, when I say "range," I'm not referring to a kitchen stove, or even an open, grassy expanse that you pasture cattle on and ride through astride a trusty, noble steed, posing for tourists as you go.  No, I'm talking about a wide variety - a range - and that is what I'll be playing today (and most of the summer)on Routes & Branches & Beyond.  I'll have Balkan celtic sailors, weathered soul, Northern dog tails, desert blues full of hope, Ethiopian one-stringed swing, islanders throwing caution to the wind, a flurry of reels, British dancing shoes, Quebecois django, summer wassailling, Vegas telephone calls, Cornish orchestral prog trad, and calming spacegrass.

There is something in the human soul of music lovers that oft craves the new - just in case there is some combination of notes and rhythms there that go beyond what has been experienced thus far.  Mathematically, we could likely compute the number of potential new combinations of notes that can be used in "new" music.  But that sounds like a stale and Gradgrind-esque task.  I'd rather go ahead and listen to new music with hope - not with an expectation that I'll hear some kind of mathematical formula in my speakers.  (Extra points to those of you who know who Mr. Gradgrind was...)  So today, on Routes & Branches & Beyond, with joyous anticipation, I have a set of music that is relatively new to this world.

I have high-octane harmonica alongside classical accordion, British flute rock with a Scandinavian accent, bawdy hurdy-gurdies, diatonic walls of wound, shanties to make you feel good about your species, an ode to the NL phone code, reels up to St. John's speed, the mind-expanding potential of longhair bluegrass, and noble Morris marches.

Today on Routes & Branches & Beyond it is the second show of a series called "Summer on the Range."  Now, you could easily be misled by this title.  You may, for example, think that it refers to summer recipes for stovetop cooking.  Which may seem odd because this is the time of year when many folks (especially men, who generally eschew any cooking done inside)spend every spare moment standing at a barbeque, in an off-colour, greasy apron that has a greasy and off-colour saying on it.  Summer is not a time for cooking on the range.  It gets too hot in the kitchen.  But instead, I have a set of muic that will keep you cool, but with just the right amount of spice to keep you from nodding off.

I have granola guitar, Irish trad trail-blazers, Newfoundland cello-driven folk, Scottish zen-pop, teeny-bopper organ, Appalachian guitar frailing, Dutch male choirs, dulcimer country, sober trad songs (sit up straight and be quiet during these...), Texican outlaw country, Canadian psychadelic folk, and British polka deliverance. One of the primary meanings of "range" is a wide variety.  So it is appropriate that this season on Routes & Branches & Beyond we're featuring a series called "Summer on the Range."  And variety is no stranger to this show.  Indeed,  Not to labour the word play, but it would be strange if there was uniformity on this show.  I don't find variety to be "strange."  I find it necessary for human life.  So this show has reverent hornpipes, Quebec suites, cowboy swagger 'n swing, jug-free rural ballads, jazzgrass wanderings, alt-country blues, west coast celtic rock, end-of-the-night waltzes, Turkish revery, the careless immaturity of the mass consumer, Irish cajun polka Queens, royal kitchen games and thoughtful jigs.

I am convinced that there should be a law against complaining about more than one season of the year.  I quickly tire of folks who take every opportunity to whine about each of the seasons the creator gives us!  At this point of the summer - these folks are complaining about the heat.  Well, in spring they complained about the rain, in the winter they complained about the cold, in the autumn they whined about how the falling leaves littered their precious lawns.  Give it up complainers!  Don't find fault with all seasons - choose just one.  Which is why I sometimes remark about the oppressive heat of summer - but I never complain about any of the other seasons.  So, I'm well within the law I am calling for.  There endeth the homily for today.

Some former huckster once said, hopefully, "there's a sucker born every minute."  Maybe this relates to our human desire for novelty - but novelty in small things.  We may generally lack an appreciation for huge changes in our lives or homes or jobs or friends, but we can crave new foods, new movies, new games, and new music.  So today on Routes & Branches & Beyond we sate your desire for the latter, with a tasting of releases of music that is relatively new to this world.

We start with contemplative guitars, then on to meandering Flemish folk, Canadian blues (as if such a feeling exists in this country...), the big bottle of joy that is gospel, thoughful spirituality set to music, celestial celtic harps, and quiet ballads of everyday wonder. When I was growing up on the farm, folks would talk about the "dog days" of August.  I was confused by this as our farm dogs were always pretty lazy at this time of year - they would just lay there in the tractor shed panting.  It didn't look like they were having a good day at all!  So I decided that adults often don't know what they were taling about - a conclusion that has been helpful - even as an adult, and now as a post-adult (aka, a "senior, with its modest discounts").  

So this week on Routes & Branches & Beyond we have another episode of Summer on the Range.
