"running. out of tune" (2013) - two harpsichords and electronics

This peace is made out of audio recording of Kurt Weill singing and playing his Speak Low. The Weill recording is truly wonderful. Intimate, sentimental, simple, nostalgic. It takes me to times I have never experienced and love stories that were and weren't mine.
Just by slowing down and focusing on a single moment, Weill's whispery s and an old tape open a door to a whole new universe. I travel from microcosmos of an archive recording to a macrocosmos of layers of choirs, voices and echoes of space, something distant, polymorphous and universal. It is a love song.

Cavitation is written for and performed by ensemble Belgrade Baroque (two baroque violins, baroque viola, viola da gamba and harpsichord).
The soundscapes of the piece show us how a propeller gets damaged by cavitation effect in real life. The work is inspired by photo of a damaged boat propeller by the effects of cavitation, as well as several videos of boat propellers captured and recorded under water.
The soundscape starts in still water that is soon interrupted by sound of motor engine and boat propeller that gradually starts to move (00:29). Once the propeller starts spinning and speeding up (01:05) it causes vapor bubbles to appear and cover the soundscape. All of a sudden (02:39), the soundscape is inside of one of the bubbles filled with vapor and we hear different situation filled with hisses and squeaky noise, as well as soft taping of other bubbles on the outside. There are two more abrupt changes of scenery to outside of the bubble (engine, propeller, bubbles) and back to its inside atmosphere. The third time the soundscapes moves deeper inside the bubble and stays there, while we begin to concentrate on bubble’s membrane and feel the water pressure getting stronger until the bubble implodes (05:17). Soundscape is back at the action of the engine, propeller and bubbles and we hear signs of malfunction due to propeller’s damage by cavitation (05:45). The piece ends with the propeller graduallt stopping and the water becoming still, again.

This piece was written for a project initiated by Tacet Ensemble in Brighton, to create responses to Sussex folksong material collected by the Cropper family. I found traces of the song I had selected in the American 'Sacred Harp' collections, and so began with a kind of hymn-singing. The remainder of the piece consists of variations of this material, some quiet and reflective (with bowed percussion) and others more boisterous. Although explicitly notated, the music is not vertically aligned, the players in effect spontaneously 'conversing' with each other to determine the rhetorical ebb and flow.

Sarah Nemtsov 'SKOP'

Maja Bosnić is a composer from Belgrade. She is drawn to impossible missions, absurd solutions, limited material, playfulness, uncertain outcomes, audience participation, treating instruments as ready-made objects of expression, and treating real-life objects as musical instruments. She obtained a PhD degree in music composition at Goldsmiths, University of London (UK), supervised by prof. Roger Redgate, and is currently working as Assistant Lecturer in Composition at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. She writes pieces for solo, chamber, ensemble, and orchestra performances, as well as, projects for electronics, multi-media, and interactive settings with audience participation. Bosnić’s works have been performed in festivals, such as Musikverein, Musikprotokoll, Impuls (Austria), CTM Festival, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Festival Jünger Kunstler Bayreuth (Germany), Spiel! Festival (Switzerland), Distat Terra Festival (Argentina), IYAF in Kingston upon Thames, London Composers Forum (United Kingdom), Tzlil Meudcan (Israel), Spazio Musica (Italy), Delian Academy of New Music (Greece), Sites + Subjects (Bulgaria), Timsonia Festival (Romania), Music Here and Now, KOMA, International Review of Composers, April Meetings, and S.U.T.R.A. Festival (Serbia). Her works have been performed with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, Secretariat for Culture of the City of Belgrade, Goethe-Institut, Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Austrian Ministry of Culture and European Cultural Foundation. She was awarded Stipendium Progetto Positano by Ensemble Mosaik from Berlin (2023), third prize at the international composition competition New Music Generation in Kazahstan 2020, honorable mention at the Thailand New Music and Arts Symposium, Delian New Music Academy in 2019, Donaueschinger Muziktage 2014, and scholarships, and annual grants by the Ministry of Youth of the Republic of Serbia (2007-2015). Since 2010, she’s been organizing workshops and concerts of contemporary music in Serbia with organization Zabuna.
