It has been 56 days since I’ve worn what would qualify as pants. Netflix needs to stop shaming me with, “Are you still watching?” Or at least start asking, “Do you really need more chips?” My quar buzz cut is starting to grow out and I get tired from taking a shower.

Confinement has us all experiencing unfamiliar restrictions.  Let’s turn those restrictions into something productive and creative together.
THE CHALLENGE

This patchable encourages you to explore square waves.  FM a VCO with a square wave and output the square wave.  Open a VCA with a GATE instead of an envelope. Ping a filter, delay or any sound processor with a GATE.  Send timed GATES to CV inputs on various modules.  Send a square wave LFO to multiple destinations.  Send an audio rate square wave to a clock divider and output multiple divisions to a mixer.  Turn other waves into square waves with a S&H.  Be creative and come up with your own use of square waves.  The only rule here, you must only use square waves as your control or sound source.

Happy new year to everybody. The POOL Berlin wishes every single one of you health, safety, joy and love. No matter where the journey will take you, you have the power to make the most of it. Like Theodore Roosevelt once said: "Believe you can and you're halfway there."
 
The next chapter in our journey takes us deep into the realm of analog noises and magnetic fields. We invited Hainbach to create the first episode of POOLcast in 2019. Hainbach is known as musician, music technologist and YouTuber and provides us with a selection of unreleased material. In his pieces he mangles aggregators, transforms vivid rhythms to shaking grooves and mutates playful melodies to mesmerizing scapes. Good foundation for a proper winter couch voyage.

Residue (NYMS Patchable 0015)

This miniature was composed for the Ertuğrul Oğuz Fırat memorial concert which took place at ITU MIAM Library on February 10, 2020.

The work does not depict any specific programmatic content, but I think it expresses the anxiety I have felt while composing it. The main source of this anxiety I believe was the contradiction between my endless respect for Fırat's work and my inability to put his work in a context. Simply put, I've felt that people like him are extinct in our times, and I did not have the right tools to communicate with him and his ideas. With respect to the great master...

not many notes here, it’s literally 208r (both oscillators doing squares) and ciat lonbarde plumbutter together, feeding back to themselves, triggering and FM-ing each other and that’s it. it’s a variation on a krell patch but pitch is not random. no post edits, no eurorack, a touch of reaper’s built in convolution reverb.

"I’ve spent the entirety of the lockdown alone in Berlin", says the Syrian-born Iraqi oud player and composer Khyam Allami. "Through it I’ve learned that we tend to forget how much our day to day interactions with people allow us to have a different perspective on what we do and how we think”. 

“I would like to encourage listeners to consider who you can see around you, and the environment that you’re experiencing, through the perspective of one of the other people that you have seen or encountered, on this short journey with me.” 

Walking Home is a series of sound journeys created to be listened to on headphones whilst walking. The five works were composed and recorded during lockdown for BBC Arts and Arts Council England’s Culture in Quarantine programme.
