For those not familiar with UMAs moves already, let's allow to give an introduction in the instructor's own words:

My name is Ugnė Uma, I am, practically, based in the plane which cruises between Vilnius and Berlin. When on the ground, working in the fabric shop by day time, hosting a radio talk show called Hao Dao, writing about art when the muses are poking & helping local music communities, festivals and fellow musicians to communicate with the outer world(s) - tangling the words.

The tonifying living between different energies of cities inspires to search for coherence - and it's going on intensively when mixing songs together; hopefully, every - even dj'ish - try to align the chaos helps the good forces to strengthen: it's time to take care how the inner strings are tuned. And of course, Slava Ukraini!

“Days On End” serves as a sonic archive of mid-pandemic moods. Through a collection of live-recorded tracks, it captures a raw, creative burst from Solotape during a period of stripped-down production. Signature rhythm-work and gritty sound design return for this extensive collection, released in two parts.

“I was kind of burnt out on music early during the pandemic - everyone at my house was suddenly home all the time and I never had any alone time to work on it. Eventually, I ended up renting a shared rehearsal spot nearby in San Francisco. My audio interface was still at home when I first moved in there, so I didn't have a way to digitally record. I brought my tape deck instead and pressed record when things started sounding good.”

“My whole setup was pretty basic with less instruments than I usually have. There was a sort of simplicity to making stuff that I think was good for me. I was just excited to work on music again, and wasn’t obsessing over the technicalities. I didn’t have any particular plans for what I was recording, and just set the tapes aside for a while. I had forgotten most of what I had recorded by the time I returned to them months later. I didn’t know what to expect once I listened back and essentially rediscovered all of the material like it was new. The tapes felt like a physical little time capsule of an earlier period. After I realized that I liked what I had made, I dubbed the tapes to digital and made some edits to clean them up. Almost everything from the three tapes is included here.”

Despite this simplified approach (or perhaps because of it), Solotape has created a body of work that is full of excitement, joy, and playfulness, as well as frustration, catharsis, and dread. At times rambling, at others immediate and visceral, it resembles a series of vignettes, tied together through a common tonal palette and form rather than emotional valence. “Days On End” strikes a balance of raw emotion and analog textures, providing an honest snapshot into the artist's internal world.

Sketches and tracks takes were recorded onto an old cassette tape, rejected and thrown out, found before long. Sound layers of vintage synthesizers was reduced to absurd simplicity and got a new life as tape loops.
