Clare’s musicality developed from an early age finding inspiration from an incredibly musical family and touring with various classical orchestras. Her passion for house music was introduced by older siblings and she began to DJ at the age of 18 when she invested in her first set of 1210s which she still uses today. The journey had begun and has been highlighted by; #1 overall on Traxsource, presenting the Let There Be House radio show with iTunes downloads 60,000/month and Soundcloud 6000/ listens month, becoming signed to Defected and Dopewax Records, speaking on the expert DJ panel at the Brighton Music Conference alongside Mr C and Jef B and being featured in the book ‘Lady of The House alongside Maya Jane Coles & Candi Staton.

I spent the four decades that I’ve waffled on about below, soaking up all the musical goodness that informs my sets today. I was always record collecting, but never thought about DJing, but that would all change when I visited San Francisco in 92. Little did I know that I wouldn’t be coming back for 11 glorious years. There I met Eddie O’Callaghan (former co-promoter of the Garden Festival in Croatia) and together we put on many club nights and events, the flagship being the Bulletproof Boat Parties. 

During those years Bulletproof welcomed countless DJ’s and bands to it’s parties including Mark Farina - DJ Shadow – Galliano - DIY – Gilles Peterson – Marquess Wyatt - Rockers HiFi - Derek Carter – Coldcut - Wicked – DJ Food – Frankie Feliciano – Greyboy and the Greyboy Allstars to name a few. I also had a residency at Mushroom Jazz playing alongside Mark Farina, DJ Is, Thomas (Then Wicked, now Rub n Tug) and George (Behind the Post Office)

When I returned to the UK in 2003 I pretty much retired from DJing, but worked for Eddie at the Magnet nightclub in Liverpool Booking the DJ and Band nights. When Eddie moved out to Croatia in 2005 to plant the seeds for the Garden Festival with Nick Colgan I went out to give them a hand and became a Resident DJ at the Garden Festival for many years. I have also been a guest at various gigs around the UK including Mr Scruff’s Tea Tent, The Devil’s Jukebox and The One Deck Sessions at Electrik

Led Zep 3 (first album I bought 1970) - Ziggy Stardust (first 45 I bought 1972) – David Bowie and Roxy Music on Top of the Pops 1972 - James Brown’s “The Payback” (first James Brown album I bought 1973) – Kool and the Gangs Wild & Peaceful (the second funk album I bought 1973) - Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon tour (Empire Liverpool 1974) - Bowie’s Station to Station tour (Earls Court 1976) – The Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks, The Clash’ White Riot, the Stranglers’ Rattus Norvegicus and The Damneds’ New Rose in 1977 –Iggy Pop Live at Colston Hall Bristol 1977 – Ian Durys live at the ? 1978 - The Blitz club 1979 - Buying Planet Rock, Walking on Sunshine and The Message from Groove Records in Soho 1982 – Art Blakey, Airto and Roy Ayers live at Ronnie Scotts - Grandmaster Flash perforforming Adventures on the Wheels of Steel at the Venue London 1984 – Flim Flam v Meltdown (later Coldcut) at the Harp Club New Cross 1984 - Afrikaa Bambaataa at the Hacienda 1984 – Gil Scott Heron at the South Bank - Monday Jazz night and Black Market Fridays at the Wag Club (‘81-‘86) - Tom Waits at the Apollo (1981) The Dominion (1985) Hammersmith Odeon (1987) – The JB’s at the Town and Country Club London 1988 - Dirtbox and many, many warehouse “raves” (’81-’86) at places like Battlebridge Rd and Clink St years before the House music phenomenom arrived with a bang with the likes of Shoom – Norman Jay’s High on Hope and Shake and Fingerpop nights - Soul II Soul DJing at the Africa Centre – Sonny Rollins at the Royal Festival Hall 1989 - Tribe Called Quest, Pharoah Sanders, Roy ayers, Galliano, Brand New Heavies and Steve Williamson at the Jazz Weekender Camber Sands 1990 - Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge at the legendary Talkin’ Loud Sunday sessions at Dingwalls (‘87-’90) where you could hear Tribe Called Quest followed by Yusef Lateef’s Brother John and no one would leave the dancefloor!

Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy is a highly respected and experienced musical selector, DJ, radio host and curator, founder of the album listening event and content hub Classic Album Sundays and an authority on music, sound and the vinyl renaissance.
 
She was mentored by David Mancuso at his seminal Loft parties in New York City. Together they co-produced the compilation series David Mancuso Presents The Loft and worked together on David’s record label The Loft Audiophile Library of Music. In 2000, David told Time Out New York City “She is very devoted and very pure about the music. She’s one of the only people I would trust, both with the music and with the equipment, to fill in for me.” She was asked by David to help manage his legacy and continues to be one of the musical hosts at The Loft in NYC. She is also the co-founder of the Lucky Cloud Loft parties in London and DJs internationally on the world's best sound systems and dance floors.

Colleen hosts Cosmodelica, a monthly radio show on Worldwide FM selected by Time Out as one of the 10 best shows in London. She is now bringing Cosmodelica to the dancefloor to high-end audio venues like London’s Giant Steps and New York City’s Public Records. In March she is hosting a Cosmodelica residency at the Prince of Wales with special guests.

In 2019 Colleen was nominated into the DJ Mag North America Hall of Fame and launched Love Dancin’ Sound System at Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival, sharing some of her musical and sonic passions to dancers outside of her existing communities to rave reviews. She will once again host the Love Dancin’ tent at We Out Here in 2020.

In the last few years Colleen has brought her uplifting musical energy to other festivals including Houghton where she has hosted a marathon set every year since its inception and is returning in 2020. She has played alongside Gilles Peterson for his closing party at his Worldwide Festival, a headline closing set at Dekmantel Selectors 2019 and sets at Kala Festival, Lost Village, One Day at the Disco, Flow Festival and Umbria Jazz Festival.

She hosted one of the most popular disco sets for Boiler Room and has recently been featured as the subject of a podcast for Resident Advisor. DJ Mag UK featured a lengthy long-read article about her in August 2019.

 Her Classic Album Sundays platform tells the stories behind the albums that have shaped our culture and in some cases, our lives. Colleen founded Classic Album Sundays as a stance against the increasing devaluation of music and sound. What began as a passion project is now the world’s most popular album listening event with satellites in four continents and the website and social media channels host content on classic albums and artists such as interviews, videos, playlists and more. BBC Breakfast Television remarked, “Classic Album Sundays treat our best-loved records like great symphonies.” She has hosted events with amazing talent such as Jarvis Cocker, Guy Garvey, Laura Mvula, Max Richter, John Grant, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and many more.
 
Colleen has been a radio host, DJ and programme director since the age of fourteen and today hosts Cosmodelica and Classic Album Sundays Worldwide on Worldwide FM and ‘This Women’s Work’ series for Public Radio International. She is the writer and host of BBC 6 Music’s album series ‘Sounds of a City’ and BBC Radio 4’s doc series ‘Turntable Tales’. Unfold Japan, a radio series she hosted for Worldwide FM and Asahi, has recently been nominated for an ARIA Award (Audio and Radio Industry Awards).
