2015's “Diversified” album proved unequivocally that Tantrum Desire has a spectrum-spanning palette to draw from. What with the undercurrent of deep house influence running through the tracklist and the excursions through tech, jungle and old skool sounds, it's clear that TD refuse to be pinned down to one classification.

One of the tracks that made a huge impression across raves and airwaves was “Pump”, championed by some of the biggest DJs on the scene from the moment it surfaced. Now, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have stepped up to reconfigure it for this series of remixes. So, we already know it's going to be killing off dances for the second time around.

DBS stamp their signature on the track right from the first note. Cinematic horns sculpt the intro into an epic, hands-in-the-air moment. And then it's all about the build. Arpeggiation meets the eponymous FXed vocal sample with a stomping kick progression to leave us in no doubt an almighty drop is coming.

The original version matched sparse drums with percussive plucks of synth-bass to create an irresistible skankers workout. This remix takes the elements and rearranges them into expert energy-building format. Drumsound & Bassline Smith begin with that stripped-back trap-style bass and beat and proceed to add complexity every sixteen bars. As it shifts up through the gears, this track takes the dance's hype levels with it.

These “Diversified” remixes continue the story that the LP started. The initial tracks demonstrated the multiple facets of Tantrum Desire's sound and now, even more layers have been revealed. This is an array of tunes equipped for every selector's set-list.

Technique Recordings head-honcho’s @DrumsoundandBasslineSmith have had a massive year; adding to this their remix of @KennyKen’s iconic track “Everyman” and they’re looking to continue their explosive takeover of 2019. 

War on Silence debuted to the drum and bass scene in November 2018 and since this point they’ve had a consistent stream of stellar releases - spearheading outputs from the likes of Heist, Funtcase, Malux, Teddy Killerz, its creator Crissy Criss and many more. And following their forthcoming release, a remix from Drumsound & Bassline Smith, it’s certain to say they won’t be slowing down with their high calibre flow of records.

With the original legendary track also featuring DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), it was first dropped in 1994, before being reworked by legends such as Kenny Ken himself, Benny Page, DJ Monk as well as a host of other taste making names over the years. Each time, the benchmark has been set even higher from the original; every artist has added their own signature palette with every version. Boasting of 24 years of history, the remix criterion is once again about to be brought through a new lens, although this time by Drumsound & Bassline Smith who add their own signature flavours along with the 2019 jungle drum and bass texture.

When Drumsound & Bassline Smith take on Kenny Ken’s “Everyman” you can instantly detect their moniker, peddling a different vibe whilst infusing a high level of energy, something which can be witnessed throughout their live sets. The junglist vocals offer the original warmth to the track, setting it up to face the twisting of its drop. It’s first breakdown will propel its listener across any dancefloor and with each almighty roar, it flourishes with the heavyweight crisp bass credentials Drumsound & Bassline Smith have become renowned for. 

It’s a remix perfect enough to deliver to the treasury of releases War on Silence have been building since their launch, as well as a remix which presents another stunning addition to the collection of revamps which have been 24 years in the making.

Nicky Blackmarket ends 2019 on point with this big double A side release from Krucial for his Kartoons label.

‘Fruity’ is by no means paying homage to the locals £2 a pop fruit machine, it’s also not promoting one of your five a day. This is stripped back addictive jump up for the masses.

Krucial takes working alongside The Ragga Twins into a different dimension by sampling their live vocal stabs rather than have them chat lyrics for a specific reason. It works well and certainly adds diversity having these legendary MCs over a track. Drone bass notes resonate through the speakerbox and Krucial’s signature skippy breakbeats do well here to match the energy of the RTC.

‘Acid Wobbles’ plays homage to the many laboratory tests of LSD way back in the 1960s. Imagine transporting this tune back to the past and blasting it out on a gramophone - mind bending is an understatement! The sampled vocals add direct flavour to this tune and twist in and out of the bass that doesn’t let up from start to finish. Tough stuff.

As we move towards the closing stages of 2020, the newly-founded but always-impressive Identity Records imprint continues to up the pace after a series of well-curated, in-depth releases. With their releases currently available on a free download basis, Identity have moved from strength to strength under the steady, innovative guidance and keen ear of label boss DIS:TURBED, and that highkey trend is highlighted yet again here.

Continuing to draw from their impressive roster of artists that includes the likes of Recon, Katon, Dubruvvas, Headroom, Medusa, Half Cab, Hickupz, Rezin and more, ‘The Third Kind’ VA EP lines up the hammer from some familiar faces, plus some new ones too; it’s the perfect balance, and a balance we’ve become accustomed to from an imprint that’s cementing itself as a key platform for the very best in new talent. This time, Identity draw for the minimal, industrial production talents of label stalwarts Recon and Katon, whilst Lisbon-based talent Resslek appears alongside DIS:TURBED & Array, with the latter pairing revisiting one of their previous cuts, giving it the good ol’ VIP treatment.

It’s all go from the start, another common theme of Identity licks; they’re really forming a slick, well-oiled substance here, whilst building a sick audience alongside and achieving some mammoth numbers, and that’s taking in both streams and downloads - expect to hear a metric tonne of Identity releases when we’re back in the clubs. Katon kicks off the EP in fine style with the mesmerically minimal ‘Body Flicka’, which balances dastardly, evil clicks & whistles with that pinpoint, submerged sound that the Identity family have made their own - this one’s already receiving some huge support from across the scene. Recon is up next with ‘Excuses’, again staking his claim and evidencing why he’s perhaps the next big thing in the minimal genre; this low-slung cut delivers on every level, with its main body writhing and galloping into the depths, never once fading out of site. Making his debut on Identity, Resslek supplies the indomitable ‘PAT’, yet another impressive outing following superlative releases across Parallel Depth, Boey Audio, Citate Forms and more.

Finally, DIS:TURBED & Array have blessed us with a VIP of ‘Primitive Instinct’, which dropped to heavy support on MadWorld Records back at the start of August. Whereas the original’s bassline had a signature bass-etched flutter throughout, the VIP reels this back slightly in favour of a deeper, more enhanced sub that pummels and headbutts with ease, teasing and flitting between the flutter and wobble of the OG cut. There’s no completely wholesale changes on show, but just enough has changed to make this an insta-cop for any likeminded Drum & Bass head. This is where the best VIP’s lie and ultimately find their place in the hearts, heads and sets of the best selectors around.
