The first in a series of four mixtapes to round off the (Hs)(01) bubble that asks a select group of producers and DJs to explore the foundations of their music taste and build a mix around those influences.

La Rage is an extremely diligent and inspiring selector based between Marseille and Barcelona, whose Salt Water show on dublab.cat is one of the most wonderfully curated and profoundly inspiring programmes I’ve listened to on community radio. 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝’𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚙𝚝 𝚋𝚎𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚖𝚒𝚡/𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚍𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚝 𝚙𝚎𝚘𝚙𝚕𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚏𝚎𝚎𝚕 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚒𝚝?

When I started thinking about the mix, I was listening back to the first album I ever bought on Bandcamp, Onda by a Korean band called Jambinai. They mix traditional instruments with experimental, post-rock, and metal. Every time I listen, I feel the same as the first time—it’s visceral, incredibly beautiful, and it hits me straight in the stomach and throat. So, I ended up creating a mix with different layers and intensity. I feel like it comes in hard, then calms down, then rises again. If you’re angry, that’s a great mix. It can work as a release, letting the energy out and resetting. Listen to it alone, it’s not an after party social mix. 

What tracks/genres form the foundations of every set that you play?

Cardi B. I’m not joking, she’s so versatile. Her voice can be mixed with house, bass, experimental, even ambient. It’s impressive. Otherwise, I always play ambient, sometimes it’s subtle, as a third layer. Artists like Nala Sinephro, which has very long, deep music, works very well with slow dubby techno. 

𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚌𝚔𝚜/𝚐𝚎𝚗𝚛𝚎𝚜 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜 𝚘𝚏 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢 𝚜𝚎𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢?

I’m a visual designer and I think I applied my own way of working with softwares. I keep the same logic which I call the Pizza process: I build a base, then I pile on elements, so it looks like a Pizza–but a quite bad one at that stage. Then I observe, cut back, edit and refine elements until it feels right. With music production (which I’m not ready to release yet), I’m still in that phase of accumulation. I need to spend a lot more time with it to be satisfied. Although I did this one cute exercise at the Ableton offices in Barcelona with Sin Sync.

I went hiking in the Pyrenees for a few days. No phone, no connection. I got a bit lost on the first trail, and it was physically tough, but there were so many moments when I’d just stop and look around. I didn’t want to do anything else. We often talk about technology as something that connects us to the world, and in many ways it does. But it also wires us into screens and constant urgency. I hadn’t realized I’d lost the ability to simply look around and feel that it was enough.

Malísima (it/she/they) understood art for the first time on a Tuesday at 8 a.m., crying in the streets of La Seu D’Urgell on the way to class at an arts-focused high school program they would drop out of three months later. Self-proclaimed "avant-garde experimentalist" and referred to as "malísima (in the head)" by those close to her, she draws on pop culture and her fragile psycho-emotional health as influential elements in her work.

With no clear sense of where she's from or how old she is, she seeks to build a sonic home (and make a living—because hey, that wouldn’t be so bad either) through bastardly contemporary productions that mix all the ingredients—internal and external—from her everyday environment.
