Haitian-American singer-songwriter Malou Beauvoir teams with Cameroonian songwriter/producer Francis Mbe and Brazilian percussionist João Parahyba on timely, globally inspired new single “The World is Crying.” 

A stunning piece of music that finds hope from the tumult and pain of modern civilization, “The World is Crying” is also a living example of cross-cultural communication. The track was co-written by Beauvoir and Cameroonian singer and multi-instrumentalist Francis Mbe. Brazilian percussionist João Parahyba added his magic to the track. Together the trio finds harmony and beauty in their unique blend of influences, backgrounds and traditions. Silken guitars, plaintive and soulful voices, an uplifting chorus and sensitive, propulsive percussion create to become a truly spiritual musical experience. As the song begins we hear the sounds of nature along with the cries of an infant; the subtle atmospherics serve as a reminder that the planet’s tears are also necessarily humankind’s, and that it is a future generation that will both inherit and (hopefully) save the world. Beauvoir considers the song a call to arms for a new generation of spiritual warriors. Beauvoir’s English lyrics are complemented by Mbe’s French and Yezum (Cameroonian) imploring words describing a world in conflict.

“This song was a true collaboration, thanks in part to a platform called Beyond Music where we all met” Beauvoir says, "These turbulent times are a vital historical crossroads. Each one of us across three continents felt affected by everything that’s going on! The World is Crying speaks about nature and the planet, as well as what we're doing to ourselves. This is a time of major upheaval, but we're also in a time of incredible spiritual enlightenment. People all over the world are waking up to social issues like racism, human trafficking, inequality, etc.  There's no choice – the world is crying because the world is being reborn.”

A citizen of the world, Malou Beauvoir has lived in the US, Europe and Haiti, and traveled extensively; each culture she has encountered has impacted and informed her in different ways, reinforcing her openness to different perspectives and forms of spirituality. That has been vibrantly reflected in the diversity and eclecticism of her recording career, which has included four gorgeous and wide-ranging jazz albums and the world music-inspired Spiritwalker, on which she combined treasured folk songs written for the spirits with original compositions inspired by contemporary social and political issues as well as the ancient spirits of Haiti. She is also a gifted actress, with credits including Stephen Frears’ Oscar-winning The Queen, Élisabeth Rappeneau’s Paul et ses Femmes, Christian Carion’s Farewell and the hit TV series Perception.

Francis Mbe is a guitarist, bassist, vocalist, composer, producer and sound engineer based in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. His work includes  collaborations with a diverse roster of vocalists including Lokua Kanza, Lady Ponce, K-Tino, André Manga, Greg Belobo, among others. 

For more than 50 years João Parahyba has been among the most renowned names in Brazilian percussion. In the late 1960s he combined the timba with the drumset to create a unique way of playing - Timbatera. He founded Trio Mocotó, a group considered one of the founding fathers of samba-rock, touring and recording with Jorge Ben Jor, Toquinho, Vinícius de Moraes and Dizzy Gillespie. Parahyba has played with such legendary artists as Ivan Lins, Sivuca, Al Di Meola and Michel Legrand.

Together these three empathic artists have crafted a song for our times; a promise to build a better future. “We've screwed up the world in pretty crazy ways,” Beauvoir admits. “But a new generation full of love will rise and join hands and open up our eyes, because the World is Crying.”

This is a very special album for me… recording in NY for the first time, with great musicians .. in a mythical studio. As with anything worth doing, there is always personal growth and sometimes growing a lot means losing a little…of who you were and where you started from.  I thank my spirits for this journey which is just beginning!

Kouzen is the powerful, yet down to earth, Haitian spirit  (LWA) of the land. He represents the humble yet hardworking peasant who transforms his land into wealth and as such is the spirit of money and riches. Rearranged with modern hip hop instrumentation and  an off beat raucous rap,  singing praises to KOUZEN ZAKA, the inspiring arrangement lends the song a sensuous reggae vibe.

Recounting a troubling vision that led to her changing her life for the better, the song refers to a spiritual man and child asking her to "listen with her heart" , for only  'love will set us free".

The 4th single from the SPIRITWALKER album, is a cry of revolt and of hope…. 
“NWAYE,” co-composed by Malou Beauvoir and Paul Beaubrun, is the Creole version of the French verb “to drown” (noyer). It alludes  to the fact that “figuratively, we are getting out of our depth, drowning in all the nonsense we are fed everyday by people trying to control our minds and actions,” Malou illuminates. “We call on Erzuli [the spirit of love] to give us hope, help us keep a level head and make the right call.” Reacting to the Haitian Assembly’s proposed restrictions on the LGBT community, in support of Mariela Castro’s movement in Cuba and to other communities ostracized because of physical appearance, religious beliefs, skin color, etc.  her lyrics speak out to people around the world, asking us to “look inside ourselves,  recognize injustice and have the courage to speak out..”

The sixth single from Malou Beauvoir’s  « SPIRITWALKER » album,  
PAPA DAMBALLAH speaks  to one of the most ancient and revered spirits in Haitian Vaudou. Creator of all life, Papa Damballah, the great white snake,  represents wisdom, morality, creation, and equity .  
The song recalls we are all his children and asks for his protection and guidance in  situations of injustice.  Beauvoir’s personal relationship with this spirit is emphasized during the spoken word passage when she « thanks him and the spirits that guide her everyday of her life for their support ». 
Originally recorded for her IS THIS LOVE  album, the song appears on the SPIRITWALKER album  as the closing song and was chosen as the end credit song in  Suzan Beraza’s film « MASSACRE RIVER: The Woman Without a Country  » which has aired on PBS over 1500 times  since Oct 1 2019 new dates are announced in November.

HIGHER LOVE – KAMOKEN ft MALOU BEAUVOIR

The 1st single from Malou Beauvoir’s eclectic upcoming new album is a cover of Steve Winwood and Will Jennings’s incredible 1986 song « HIGHER LOVE ». 
Jennings described the song as a  « modern hymn » with a spiritual influence from his Arkansas childhood upbringing.

KAMOKEN & Malou Beauvoir decided to record the song in an effort to sensitize the Caribbean –American voters to the importance of voting in this upcoming election.
Beauvoir says, “As I sat through confinement in NY during the COVID pandemic, I listened to the politicians’ responses to the pandemic and witnessed the impact on all communities. I watched as Trump’s messages strove to divide Americans and fuel the flames for racism in the U.S. and internationally, blindly blaming the Chinese, and other countries for his mismanagement of the crisis.  I realized then that GREED, bullying and money had become the main political platform in America…and that the only way to hope to change this broken system was to get every last person out there voting. 
One evening, I turned on the radio and heard « HIGHER LOVE » …I realized that I wanted more than anything to “do my part” and to help remind people that we need to look higher…and deeper within ourselves.  We must strive to protect the values and ideals that America once represented. We need to nourish our minds and hearts with hope and realize that we can come back from this difficult period, but only if we are ALL willing to join hands and work to make our dreams a reality. I believe in America and in the goodness and resilience of our people. As I listened to the song, I realized that I couldn’t find a better way to put those thoughts across than with Winwood and Jennings song…if I could only find a way to do it justice. So I teamed up with Haitian producers (KAMOKEN) Chico Boyer and Cheff Loncher, and said,  "We have to get every Haitian American out in the polls and voting!" With their experience and commitment to the Caribbean and Latin community, together we created a new version of HIGHER LOVE, reflecting what we each thought would touch voters the most. I wanted to highlight the lyrics and soul of the song, Cheff wanted to keep it fresh and light. Chico wanted the Haitian rhythms. With the participation of ALAN CAVE who chimed in with the ending Haitian chorus, and LAISSA BOYER on background vocals, we made our version!
All of us are “KAMOKEN” (which means « the Wild Maroon » or the “invincible one”), when we get out and make our VOTE count!

Haitian-American singer-songwriter Malou Beauvoir seeks spiritual healing in a divided world with her Creole lyric version of the beloved hit “You Raise Me Up”
Due out  March 31, 2021, “Kenbem”  (Panthera Music International, Peer Music, Universal) reimagines the soul-stirring Secret Garden / Josh Groban classic to reconcile believers in Vaudou and Christianity

“You Raise Me Up” was originally released in 2002 by the Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden, written by the band’s Rolf Løvland with lyrics by the Irish author and songwriter Brendan Graham. A year later, Josh Groban’s version climbed to the #1 spot on the Billboard adult contemporary chart and cemented the song’s status as a modern classic. It’s since become a hit many times over around the world, covered by more than a hundred artists including Westlife and Celtic Woman.

Beauvoir heard something new and personal in the song, however. In her interpretation of Graham’s lyrics, she found parallels to the schism between Vaudou practitioners and the Christian Church in Haiti, the country of her roots. The divide is deep-seated, dating back to the Haitian Revolution at the turn of the 19th century.
