Where did you grow up? Was it a single place or many places? How did this influence the songs you listened to?

I was born and raised in Detroit. I've resided most of my life in Southwest Detroit and that definitely has an impact on what I listen to.  Music has been a topic of conversation since grade school.


Can you pick one song in the mix and explain where you first listened to it?

Project Pat - Now You Know The Business
I first heard this song on a bootleg cassette I bought from the dollar store. Bought that tape 3 times because my teacher confiscated it when I listened to it in class.


Who “introduced” you to these songs? Was it a person, a radio station, a CD?

I used to sit in front of my boombox and just listen to WJLB, WDRQ and The Planet all day. My mom and dad had records, CDs, and cassettes of all kinds of stuff like Motown, jazz, freestyle and rock. Even my sister would give me tapes when I was younger.


Where and when did you first hear techno? Who did it sound like it was for?

My first impressions on techno music was on mix shows that aired on WJLB with DJs like Gary Chandler, DJ Polo, DJ Zap just to name a few. I thought to myself, “wow this music has a lot of energy and bass to it. I could imagine people in a club with lots of lights and big speakers.” 


You’ve got the microphone. What do you want to say?

My words to the techno community: Don't make this shit cookie cutter music!!!! keep pusing further than what it is now and remember it's to bring people together and sonically take you into the future.

Jamming With Malzof returns for Ep. 2 with music released by Chicago-based label Guidance Recordings. The label was active from 1996-2004, with a few recently restored archives from Callisto/DKMA z”l. The label had a focus on Deep House & many other genres, including a cultivation of “lounge” and atmospheric. All tracks shared are from Guidance, except for one track “Day Dreaming” played by one of the original label founders, Spencer Kincy/Gemini, who quickly left the label and released music elsewhere, such as on Peacefrog due to sonic and other differences.

Jamming With Malzof Radio is an exploration of and tribute to dance music labels & artists releasing tracks from the 80s to the early aughts. Jamming With Malzof radio will hone in on a specific label, affiliated artists and their musical connections, sharing some of the context for the music and insights from your host @JMALLisART (ig/twitter) @Malzof (soundcloud)

In 12 years as a DJ, Associate built his reputation on versatility. In his early days, he played Detroit House to get opening gigs all the while collecting his beloved techno and playing it for several people in the basement of the 9:30 club. Those heads noticed and in short order, he joined Vague Output in Baltimore and Sequence in DC. With Sequence, he fully realized the stresses and satisfaction that come with immersion in all night parties at warehouses in a major US city. He heard adulation from his sets for DVS1, Erika, BMG, and DJ Stingray as often as he heard the brusque instruction of a policeman or fire marshall. Through it all he clings to this underground music and passion for his latest adventure, Midwest Plenty. Under this name, he invites fellow midwest DJs who march under the radar and keep the underground alive. 

Midwest Plenty aside, Associate holds a monthly at Eaton Radio where he invites local electronic music artists of all genres. Again, his versatility is on full display from month to month while he plays warmup for his talented guests. Over the last few years, he seeks to leave his own mark, creating mindbending mixes, like this installment for R&D, along with his own productions he started early in March 2020. In keeping his midwest politeness, Associate appreciates listens and feedback and of course thanks the R&D crew and Furtive for inviting him.
