You do not 'decide' to compose a certain piece. You hear it, in your mind. It chooses you. Or rather....it takes the form, as Martin Amis said, citing Nabokov, of a 'pang'. And if you ask yourself, 'why am I composing this piece?', the question is always rhetorical. Because you know you will spend the following hours, days, weeks or months, composing it, regardless of your 'preference'. That is to say, regardless of whether you would 'prefer' to compose 'something else'. And this is so because it is a 'pang'; which will not 'go away', until you have finished composing it. This piece interested me, not because I claim or assert it has any particular merit. It interested me for three reasons. The first reason, is that I found it difficult to play (outwith the fact I have played more technically challenging pieces without thinking about them being 'difficult to play'). The second reason it interested me, is that after composing and recording it, it seemed to cease to exist, almost immediately following it's creation. The pang may have gone, but so too, in a peculiar way, the piece itself seemed to disappear. Like an exotic particle, capable of enjoying merely a fleeting existence in a particle accelerator, before becoming 'something else'. Thirdly, I have no idea whether the piece will find favour, or sink without trace. Normally, you have some sort of idea (whether reasonably or unreasonably held) concerning whether a piece is tolerable or otherwise. However, I truly have no idea. No idea at all (when it comes to this piece).
