Woman In The Mirror (Musical Art Of Anais Giulia)

Bruce Klepper's beautiful piece "Chiaroscur" inspired me a few ideas about art that I wrote in French. I sang them over Bruce's instrumental, improvising some melodies and vocal harmonies, and here is the result.

L'art pour l'art, ou l'art pour l'argent?
Car il faut bien vivre, il faut bien survivre.
C'est bien évident...
Parfois c'est bien clair.
Parfois ça dépend…
Pour atteindre les rêves il faut rester sur sa faim,
et jeuner souvent, et prier longtemps.  
On prie quand on cherche la réponse dans l'âme,
la beauté dans le geste, le génie dans le vent.
L'obsession qui nous prend de puiser le néant,
de parfaire une esquisse, de créer tâtonnant,
c'est ça l'art pour l'art
qui coule dans le sang.

Life throws us such surprises that sometimes it seems impossible to get out of the cycle. But in all circumstances, the impossible often becomes possible.

The fact we can communicate with other people (in real-time or across centuries) through music, is extraordinary. Dating from 1787, Mozart's String Quintet in G minor K.516 speaks to me of very real hardship he endured towards the beginning of the end of his life. And when he was in hell, he kept going (he continued to compose). For reasons obscure to the author, his later String Quintet in D major K.593 (always two violas) is infused with beauty so delicate it can only have been the result of hope...because by now he is so powerful (musically if not monetarily) that he can simply replace despair with hope as a function of sheer determination, within a musical space over which he holds complete dominion. His much earlier String Quintet K.174 in B Flat major does not seem to me to form part of his opera of more profound String Quintets (K. 406, 515, 516, 593 and 614) perhaps because his much earlier effort (K.174) was merely an experiment (which I sense, but do not claim to know). My point? Why talk about yourself, when you can talk about Mozart?
