As a current participant at the Recurse Center in NYC, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring new forms of composition, most specifically in the Python programming language. At first I was focused on writing my library of compositional tools that work with MIDI data, though I was soon introduced to the idea of data sonification through another “recurser”, Edith Viau (MTL), who explores the subject through her Financialist project. Edith seemed to be the only other person at RC exploring the subject already and we soon formed the Data Sonification Group at RC thereafter.
Sonifications of Price consists of two compositions written in Python, mapped to the prices of Bitcoin and Gold, respectively. “Bitcoin” represents the price everyday from 2010-2021 and “Gold” represents the price each month since 1950.
Large and invisible forces run our modern world and often they can feel exceptionally abstract, and even scary within the context of our lives. This work is an attempt to demystify their scale and convey a translation of power.

"The relationship of Alley Catss (aka Máté Janky) and EXILES dates back to the very beginning of the label and includes numerous joint efforts and memorable collaborations. He kicked off the first compilation album (EX01) of the label in 2017, contributed several tracks to various VA albums throughout the years, plus he co-organized events and mixes with EXILES, bringing forth artists from his own label too (Daddypower Records). It was just about time to finally have the first full-length Alley Catss release landing in the catalog, presenting seven ethereal tracks, each bearing Janky’s unique voice and dedicated vision for composition and sound design.

Vernacular Cortex Music is a sharp and focused sonic journey in 30 minutes, representing both hard-hitting, glitched beats and icy digitalia as well as fantasy-oriented, dreamlike scenarios. Stepping off the grid and exploring uncharted territories, the first three tracks (st_x, β and β<) share an attitude of overdriven madness, firing up kickdrums, distorted screams and rumbling bass. As the album progresses to Εσχ, the pieces of sound introduced in the first half of the album become even more scattered with more space to breathe, which then slowly fade into a coherent sonic sphere of echoes, mechanic angst and rusted, suffocating dread.

The latter half of Vernacular Cortex Music is a much more sensitive, careful and tender take that bears the stains of stress and uncertainty (_yg), yet shows a way to a future that promises care, joy and an idea of sanity. Like going back to sleep after waking up from a nightmare, +C takes us to a gentle world of sweet dreams, full of virtual harpsichords and iconic organ basses. Finishing up the album, _int is a beatless, waving pulsation with soft rumbles, mellow sighs and bubbling reverberations, slowly closing up Alley Catss’ long-awaited debut on EXILES." - Nemerov

JUnQ, or the Journal of Unsolved Questions, is modeled on a parallel exercise: to sketch music and to score sculptures. Part exhibition, part book and part album release, JUnQ seeks to propose a collaborative language that binds the algorithmic needs of an artificial pop star to the performance of the artist himself. Boundaries between reality and artifice are blurred in a continuous chain of confrontation and sublimation, wherein a romance between analog evolution and digital experimentation is born.

The immersive project released by PAN represents Erwan Sene’s debut album and the multifaceted nature of his approach. Composed like a chorus of fantastical beasts, the album wanders atmospherically through a fogged wood. Sounds are never used for their default function–– they are sculpted, distorted and amplified, becoming hybrids of themselves. A haunting banshee, the monstrous growl of an Orc, Siren songs wafting through the trees–– these and more are recreated with sinuous violins, muffled harpsichord and digital instruments, culminating in a a vibrant “jungle” of sound.

Wild soundscapes from Benedict Drew, an artist splitting his time between installation art and music that hums and spills over with vivid material encounters; sounds are slurpy, runny, fizzy, spongy, hard as rock.

After digital releases, a tape for patten’s Kaleidoscope label, a musical score to accompany his De Re Touch video art project commissioned by Transport for London’s Art on the Underground, and many active years in London’s experimental music scene through work with the London Musicians’ Collective, Ninja Tune, and live collaborations with Rhodri Davies, Chris Watson and Sachiko M; Crawling Through Tory Slime is Drew’s debut long-playing record. Music on each of the record’s faces bleeds together continuously, recalling long improvisational sets, floor-sucking dub-wise, psychedelia, plunderphonics, and tight GRM-era electronic sound design pieced together with drum machines, cloudy synthesiser, bits n’ bobs. There’s a certain English charm, humour and taste for cheap science fiction and cobbled-together escape routes out of reality that follows a lineage set out by artists like Jeff Keen or Bruce Lacey, reset for the exciting horrors and delights of contemporary life.

Benedict Drew’s solo exhibition The Trickle Down Syndrome runs from June to September at the Whitechapel Gallery, designed over the same period as the LP and "drawing on wide-ranging references, from the stage sets of classic Hollywood cinematographer Busby Berkeley to the Surrealist worlds of artist Max Ernst".
