The Other Song - Study 2

This piano miniature piece was created to commemorate the 70 years from the creation of The Friends of Music Society of Greece, as well as the 100 years from the birth of Xenakis.  It explores the ever-unfolding interplay between sky and sea, or the evaporation/condensation/rain cycle – also known as the cycle of water.  The piece is named after the female spirits of sea waters of Ancient Greece, Nereides / Νηρηΐδες.

It is composed from melodic material extracted (or more precisely, sonified) from this image of intricate clouds.  Utilizing Xenakis's UPIC approach, six trajectories were captured and converted to music, using variations of luminosity in this cloudy sky.  These six trajectories were carefully selected to work with each other to create harmony and rhythm.

A few years before he died, my Father (a poet - his main calling in life), gave me a folder with song lyrics of his that never made it into songs... and told to do whatever I thought best with them.  At the time (1992), I put together a song - a mixture of Zeimpekiko (a set of traditional Greek folk rhythms in 9/8 meter) and... (yes, do not laugh), Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"...  I just discovered it, and recorded it.  This is the 2nd take, no editing (as is)...   //  Λίγα χρόνια πριν φύγει από τη ζωή, ο πατέρας μου, ο ποιητής, μου έδωσε κάποιους στίχους του, που δεν έγιναν τραγούδια, και μου είπε να τα μελοποιήσω όταν θέλω... "αυτά τώρα είναι δικά σου".  Του έφτιαξα ένα κομμάτι δείγμα τότε...  Μόλις το ξαναβρήκα...  εδώ σε μια γρήγορη ηχογράφηση, γιατί τι καλό είναι ένα τραγούδι... αν δεν το ακούει κανείς...
