Man at Arms - Illegal Techno Mix #1

Basaec is the new label from Lucien Nicolet, AKA Luciano, the Chilean DJ and producer behind the Cadenza Records label (recently celebrating its tenth year in operation), and an artist always on the cusp of new musical frontiers.  Promising the label to be a very true representation of the man and his music, and with another nine releases planned over the coming year, the label will be both a vehicle for brand new music, as well as an imprint to release tracks from the archives.  In fact the first six releases primed are all unreleased tracks produced by Luciano over the last ten years, reworked and modified for a 2014 release.

Basaec kicks off its first release with two tracks that pre-date his first official releases.  Credited to Luciaen, and produced at the tender age of 19, ‘Cadenza’ is perhaps the first track that kicked off a unique and eclectic production career spanning over fifteen years (as well as giving name to his record label and DJ management company years later), and features the young producer himself on vocals.  The release is backed with another early production from 1997 titled ‘Stranger’.

These early productions shine a light on the fledgling sound and style of Luciano’s music, taking its influences from European synth music as well as Detroit techno (these tracks were demoed to Derrick May’s Transmat label), throbbing and minimal machine music, drenched in emotive soul and cold melancholy.  Despite the young age at which these tracks were produced, they show a confidence and maturity, and certainly some innocence too, music made way before the successes came….

Luciano’s first releases came to fruition at the turn of the millennium, a series of experimental techno and ambient 12”s on the Swiss ‘Mental Grove Records’ label, really sowing the seeds of the sound and atmosphere that has become so synonymous with the Cadenza head honcho.  Since these early releases, Luciano’s musical wings have spread to encapsulate, not only his huge body of work on his own Cadenza label, but also music for imprints like Peacefrog (as Lucien-N-Luciano), Perlon, Diamonds & Pearls and Desolat, to name but a few.

Swiss duo ‚Fat Sushi’ is currently making its trademark on the underground clubland by signing their debut EPs on the hype chart-rocking OFF Recordings – featuring the vocals of US legend Roland Clark – as well as being signed to Oliver Koletzki’s Imprint ‚Light My Fire’ Records and Coyu’s ‘Suara’. It looks like the guys from Zurich found their own tasty receipe for ‚Fat Sushi’: Oldschool flavoured beats meet powerful basslines with a funky twist. Simple, yet very effective.
Being in the game for almost two decades before they decided to join forces in early 2013, you can hear the inspiration of various musical styles in their productions: from oldschool Chicago House to the late 80ies and early 90ies – already being supported by the current keyplayers of the Deep House scene such as Reboot, Jay Lumen, Round Table Knights as well as Robert Owens, Boris Dlugosh, Kolombo or Tapesh.
Keep an eye on this Swiss cold fat fish, because sooner or later, Fat Sushi will make you dance…

Where to start with this one...this is the fourth remix I've done for The Knocks, and I think its safe to say after this there's something awesome going on when we do something together.  Not that they need any introduction at this point but The Knocks are a duo from NYC who consistently put out incredible tunes and although we make very different kinds of music I think we're both inspired by a lot of the same things.  Sneaky Sound System always manages to deliver epic vocals that lend themselves very well to being remixed, and when I first heard "The One" I got inspired pretty much instantly.  As I often do with my remixes, I decided to take the track from a more serious and minor-key tone into a uplifting major progression, and this remix combines a lot of my current influences into a track that has a lot of different sounds all working as one (and no I did not mean to create a horrible pun there).  This remix was an insane amount of work, my Ableton session was around 250 tracks for this one, but it was worth it - this is by far my favorite track I've done to date and something I hope you guys will be listening to for a long time to come.
