Hailing from Melbourne but currently based in London, Air Max '97 is a nomadic creature whose leftfield club tracks draw on a vast pool of influences – from grime, gqom and noise music, to inorganic materials and consumer fetish objects. Oliver van der Lugt's latest EP, "Falling Not Walking", finds him flaunting an ever more bizarre sound palette and collaborating with two equally inventive UK-based producers: TSVI and LOFT. The latter's handiwork can clearly be felt in the choppy surfaces of 'Xhrinicibles', a disorienting landscape threaded with echoes of drum & bass and wyrd IDM. It's a cerebral highlight from the four-track EP, out on Air Max '97's own label DECISIONS on 14th June.

Noumenal Loom Records is excited to announce the release of Neotropical, a posthumous curation of the work recorded 2014-2017 from Colin Ward’s Killd By series. We were working closely with Colin Ward at the time of his passing, but with the generous help of his friends and family we were able to see the release through. Colin was an integral member of the Rhinoceropolis artists collective in Denver, CO, where he lived and worked. Across his work in the visual and sonic arts, Colin was highly adaptable - shapeshifting between various genres and mediums at all times. Neotropical further hones the familiar vocoded vox, featherweight synths, scattershot drums and icy timbres found on previous albums, such as: EMT, Recovery & DDR3:Loaner phone. We feel that Neotropical presents with a great deal of lucidity and cohesion. Smoldering FM synthesis and endlessly arching arpeggios hold the listener above the ground. Neotropical thrives in the club and the home. All proceeds will be donated to the “CRFW Fund” which provides DIY artists’ grants in Colin Ward’s name. We feel very honored for the small role we are able to play in promoting a piece of Colin’s prolific & generous output.

Colin Ward (1990-2018) was a musician, visual artist, prolific collaborator and a champion of the Denver DIY space Rhinoceropolis. Ward produced close to 100 full albums of music, composed for theater & film. He was a talented instrumentalist, beginning with percussion and branching out to various electronic and acoustic instruments. Alphabets, Tudaloos, Dj POoLsiDe, phonebooks, Bangplay, Snake Feathers and Chamber Joy are just a few of his projects. His visual artwork included painting, mixed media and video. There’s no simple way to wrap Colin’s work in a neat package - understanding the breadth of his output requires a deep dive into the world he built. fmvee joins Queeste with who do u love?, an EP of fractious songs recorded over a tumultuous four-month period in Los Angeles. Having debuted in 2018 with a set of club contortions touching on jungle and 2-step, the US artist returns with a work of intense self-reflection. Lived experiences are transmuted into an amorphous bricolage of pummelling kicks, synthetic textures, and diaristic details, what they describe as an act of “remembrance.”

Working and living in LA, the “grind” alongside “aspirational partying,” and the confrontation of depression during an intense relationship, informs the EP on levels both sonic and thematic. The slippery rhythm and melodic stabs of ‘the way you see yourself’ embodies a state of flux, also recalling the early experiments of the LA beat scene. Distant jazz drumming fills its peaceful coda before ‘everythingUneverKnewUwanted’ introduces an echo lifted directly from the artist’s life: a trickling courtyard fountain. This first phase of the release finds resolution with ‘thewayothersseeyou,’ a conceptual mirror to its start, and one which carries a notable shift in tone; gleaming percussion has given way to ominous synths.

Despite the EP’s personal nature, collaboration is crucial. ‘Seed Perfuming (LoLo v665)’ is an fmvee original transformed into a cascading breakbeat by New York producer and engineer Loric Sih AKA LoLo, an ecstatic yet familiar form nestled amidst otherwise bruising encounters. ‘sobbing’ follows, a digital-age ballad of original lyrics exploring dependency: emotional, physical, and otherwise. It’s a poignant conclusion to an appropriately hallucinogenic collection, an intoxicating chemistry of love and loneliness conjured through a fine balance of bass, percussion, discord, and harmony.

On behalf of fmvee, a percentage of all profits will be donated to Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition, a community-based organisation that mobilises community members for the health, dignity, and safety of people targeted by the war on drugs and anti sex-worker policies.

I had a fever and a cough and was waiting for the results of my covid test. This is the mood. I had planned something completely different but I let myself go with the flow of my disorder. Playing music when you're feverish and overtired really brings something different I think! Here, a kind of jerky brutality and some delirium moments.
