Hope... Hope is the sleaziest pimp in the game. It struts in wearing a cheap fur coat and a grin that promises everything but guarantees nothing. You know it’s a hustle, but there you are, buying every last word, handing over your soul like a sucker in a bad poker game. Hope doesn’t care about your dignity—it sells you tomorrow while kicking you in the teeth today.

This is no love story. Hope is the kind of lunatic that drags you through the mud, a sadistic coach screaming, “Get up! Keep moving!” while the world pelts you with rocks. It thrives on chaos, gets its kicks watching you stumble forward, bloody and delirious, clinging to the idea that something better must be just over the next hill. Spoiler alert: there’s no hill, just more goddamn rocks.

But here’s the catch—it works. You keep crawling, limping, swearing through gritted teeth, because deep down, you know that hope is all you’ve got. And somehow, against all odds, that bastard candle keeps burning, even in the middle of a hurricane.

Counterterraism December 2024 - Mix 4 (Katrin)

The Barcelona-based Spanish artist Syd dePalma returns to Rotten City with a new track, following his dazzling EP Blanco Sombra (RCF040, 2023). Beneno delves into existential duality and how, amidst chaos, unexpected clarity can emerge.

The lyrics play with the feeling of being and not being at the same time, of getting lost in confusion yet finding something valuable in the process. A key phrase captures this idea: "Aquí no estoy, no desperté; allí sí estoy y ya bailé" ("Here I am not, I didn’t wake; there I am, and I’ve already danced"), summarizing the concept of transformation and movement, even when everything seems dark. It’s a balance between the ethereal and the visceral, blending post-punk elements like profound guitars and heavy basslines with synthesizers that bring light and an almost hopeful energy. It feels like walking through a dark night, but with guiding flashes of light. A perfect soundtrack for an intimate space or for dancing in a club during the early hours of the morning.

The release is complemented by a remix from Argentinian producer Julian Sanza, based in Bogotá. Resident of Kaputt Club and member of legendary projects like Silver City, Ciudad Feliz, and 2020 Vision Soundsystem, Sanza transforms the original into a Cosmic Disco odyssey, a signature style that adds a fully “DJ-friendly” touch for the dancefloor.
