Arma Records returns with a rare treat from legendary DJ Mick Wills. Mick has been active in the seedier corners of electronic music for more than 30 years, first immersing himself in the world of hi-NRG and new wave before embracing the house, techno, acid and electro explosion of the late 1980s. Aligned with DJ Hell in the 90s and more recently the Intergalactic FM crew, he’s the quintessential selector. A life spent digging in the undergrowth for deviant dance music has given him the edge that makes a truly gifted spinner, without riding on hype or studio productions.

However, Mick isn’t adverse to the odd outing on vinyl, having previously appeared on International DJ Gigolos both solo and as The Kinky Lovers with sometime partner Isabella Venis, but these moments are few and far between. For this release on Arma, Mick has given us two edits that speak to his distinctive style as a DJ – the original tracks are cult choices re-moulded into deadly, subversive club weapons. The brooding darkwave of “Himmelfahrt 89” is enough to turn the most indifferent bar crowd into swaying, baying denizens of the night, while “Stay Silent” pummels out a relentless electro motif that teeters on the edge of destruction for 11 thrilling minutes.

These aren’t crowd-pleasing DJ tools, and neither are they slick and easy edits of obvious classics. This is a peek into the inner workings of a man with decades of experience working masses of flesh into a sweaty fever pitch using sounds you’ve never heard before.

The mastering on Mick’s edits was undertaken by none other than Dutch electro legend Rude 66, while the striking artwork on the sleeve sees Arma reach out for the first time to French artist Judex. The nerve-shredding, broken Op-Art assault was originally found in a book published by cult illustrator Sam Rictus.

Recording Podcasts, in my eyes, is in most cases something that only transports bits of a story - leaving out the full picture. If you record a DJ set at a club, you ideally will create a narrative that fits the people and the room you are playing for. However, listening back to that recording will leave this important detail out of the picture. Of course, you as the DJ and people that were there that night will "get it", but if you were not there you might be wondering why the DJ played that song, why s/he played softer or harder than usual - it is not clear. 

Recording a mix at home comes with similar problems: Where do you want to take your listener? If you want to deliver a club set, it will not be an authentic recording in the end - I can not record a club set at home, with only my dog in the audience. The energy will never reach the energy a recording from an actual club night will be able to deliver.

For this Electronic Explorations podcast, I recorded two mixes in a way, in which I would play my DJ sets in a club. The results lacked the pressure, the urge and the spontaneous creativity I'd let myself be led by in a sweaty DJ booth. This led me to this conclusion and eventually, I decided to delete both of these recordings and start over.

So one night I went to bed and turned on the radio - Deutschland Radio Kultur, which is a German culture radio station. And they were broadcasting the audio drama "Mein Herz ist Leer" ("My heart is empty") by Werner Fritsch. A dark, possessive voice was reading stitched-together haikus and thereby telling a story of a struggling monk buried in sound-design by Miki Yui. I loved what this story did to me before falling asleep and I could not wait to get up in the morning to try to create a podcast around this story.

My idea was to keep the story alive and become its music supervisor, trying to choose tracks that I loved in 2017 and using them to tell the story, even if you do not understand the German narrator word by word, I was aiming to select sounds, that will, in combination with the ever-present voice of the narrator, drive the story just through the music. At the same time, I tried to create a listening experience that sits between soothing calmness and chilling shudder - just like some of the old Eastern European Christmas tales I've been listening to when I was a child.

I've done a mix like that before at Dommune in 2013, where I took an old Japanese horror story and used the music to drive the story itself. Technically I did it the same way here: Mixing with records and Traktor and using a sampler to launch the bits of the audiobook at the right times.

The three original tracks, a mix of ethnic looting and industrial racket in slow motion, feel like steel wrapped in Turkish delight. Front de cadeaux’s take on “Illicite Cong” is reminiscent of an erotic rave flavoured with Oriental spices. Last but not least, Kris Baha slices up “Exit” like a tablier de sapeur (local Lyonnais dish) served on a julienne of  syncopated samples and noisy beats.

For the 23rd release on Pinkman, Rotterdam based Mitchell Goor delivers a slow, raw and warped 4 tracker. The contrast between unpolished percussive instruments and ethereal melodies reoccurs throughout the release and gets polished and refined by haunting vocal samples and pungent acid bass lines. This gives the record an ability to take audiences on rollercoaster rides through tension and anger as well as hope and promise, powered by permanent, adrenaline stimulating, raw energy.

The subject matter was dry, the debate neared an end. Two tables sat facing outwards onto a panel of disgruntled audience members as the conversation policy reached an uncomfortable strain. The lights in the TV studio shone down brightly from above and illuminated the glowing faces of the sweaty panel members in a hazy blur. This was not glamorous, far from it, politics was now a brutal deathmatch of sorts by which only one winner would triumph and the rest would burn...

Night Christ is a project produced by John Daly, a man who seems to be as active as ever with a steady stream of curveball releases. His latest is a new wave inspired track in collaboration with Jack Considine which borders on pop, a new favourite.
