New Finds For New Fans [July 2019]

INDIE/July 2019

Crack! That's the sound of The Whip marking the end of a two week break. Things continue in a similar indie/alt rock theme courtesy of Ghum (with an "h"), and Miss World. The Skints then take us into reggae territory, aided and abetted by the ever-reliable Mungo's Hi-Fi (and Eva Lazarus. Then it's a detour via R&B with Lauren Faith, before we get into a run of more "conventional" soul, first with The Young Ones of Guyana, and then Australia's excellent Teskey Brothers. Another quick diversion through some quirky pop, courtesy of Mannequin Online bringing us to the closing dulcet tones of Penguin Cafe. I'm a BIG fan of The Teskey Brothers, and really like the tracks by Ghum and The Skints, but pick of the week is The Whip's "Hot Tone" garage rock/pop at its very best.

Los Angeles alternative rock band Raised on TV are gearing up for the release of their second album, aptly titled Season 2 with another little perfectly formed rock nugget in the shape of "Soul on Fire".

While their previous single "Steal My Heart Away" tipped its hat to mid-1990s alt-rock, "Soul on Fire" looks more towards 1980s hard rock and early 2000s emo. Opening with a tightly wound, classic rock riff that rubs against glimmering guitar lines and more reflective melodies from vocalist Keaton Rogers, the band push against the edges of their sound. It's a dynamic opening with the band taking their sweet time to line all the core components up before launching into an electrifying, pop-rock chorus that will undoubtedly send a whole dancefloor of sweaty bodies bounding skywards. Think Death Cab for Cutie jamming with Saves the Day after a heavy afternoon, binging on early Judas Priest and you're pretty close.

Lyrically, the song concerns Rogers' concerns about our increasing addiction to technology, as he explains.

"Imagine throwing your cell phone out the window for a day, not caring, and then seeing where that road would lead you. That modern-day fantasy of escaping our new connected world, which feels so impossible nowadays, only to rediscover who you really are is what 'Soul on Fire' is really about." - PopMatters

"'Drain' spouted directly from my feelings of frustration and almost claustrophobia of a repetitive and monotonous routine that I was stuck in. For me these feelings came from a typical 9-5 call centre job where I spent the majority of time dreaming of my actual passion. I think we’ve all been in those situations or some even are still in them at present minute, so I always saw Drain (musically and sensually) as a huge release of pent-up emotion that can relate to a huge portion of our society."

Recorded in London back in 1970, now reissued by BBE Music, ’On Tour’ is the debut album by journeyman band The Young Ones Of Guyana. The group gained popularity in Britain through performances in London and Birmingham following the first Guyanese ‘Mashramani’, a celebration of independence from the United Kingdom. We can only assume this album was recorded during that same visit, produced by bandleader Carlton Ramprashad and issued on his own ‘Rampy’ imprint. Aside from the traditional Guyanese folk song ‘Yellow Girl’, the album covers a wide range of popular reggae, latin and calypso songs of the day, deftly performed by a group of talented musicians. Funky interpretations of reggae smash ‘The Liquidator’ and Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Sing A Simple Song’ have made ‘On Tour’ a rare and coveted classic for record collectors and DJs worldwide. The Young Ones Of Guyana was an 8 piece band comprising drums and two percussionists alongside bass, lead guitar, Farfisa organ (played by Geoffrey King), lead vocals and rhythm guitar from founder/leader Ramprashad (apart from ‘That Wonderful Sound, which was voiced by Gordon Bevaun). Recorded at the iconic Lansdowne Studios in Holland Park, ‘On Tour’ captures a youthful travelling band, carrying the excitement of their nation’s newfound freedom with them as they invited their former colonial rulers to join them in celebration of Guyana’s music and culture.
