The idea behind “Agoras I” lies upon the observation between the tactile nature of traditional, outdoor markets, and the more clinical character of the modern shopping center; in the former one tends to buy an object that is functional and fulfills its purpose without much else, while in the latter one obtains an object but buys an idea (a brand), a reflection of lifestyle as this has been propagated by the various media of our time.
Agoras are public spaces used for assemblies and markets and are a social hub for the exchange of goods and ideas. 
In terms of space, outdoor markets are situated in open, urban spaces creating a nested independent soundscape within, and directly contributing to, the urban soundscape. Street markets have a traditional aura and are more audio-oriented environments, in which the sellers use the sound of their voice as medium to reach the customers. 
The soundscape of a shopping centre on the other hand is “locked” inside the walls of a building; isolated from the surrounding community. The medium used to entice the customers here is more visual than sonic, so the place is more visually-oriented. Shop windows and labels propagate the products, while sanitary pop music sounds either through the shopping centre as a whole or inside each individual shop. 
“Agoras I” is the first of a cycle of pieces investigating how this divide, between traditional and modern markets soundscapes, shifts throughout capital cities of the European Union. For this piece the chosen European capital is Athens, Greece. Agoras 1 was performed in World Forum of Acoustic Ecology Conference, Corfu 2011.

Serendipity

Born in Athens in Greece (1975). He studied composition and film at Columbia College Chicago in Illinois. In 2006 he graduated from the Ionian University with a Masters Degree in Electroacoustic Composition. He is currently a research student at DMU studying with John Ritchards and Andrew Hugill.

He works as a composer since 1998. He has composed works for small ensembles, solos, electroacoustic installations, video art  and multimedia shows. He has also composed the original music for theater shows, documentaries, tv series, short films and theater dance shows.
