One of my favorite things about December is its Geminid meteor showers. Unfortunately I missed this year's showers, but I have experienced meteors up close from a mountaintop as speeding balls of light whooshed by — they sang a hissing hum as they flew within a thousand yards overhead. Through a cloudy mist I saw spectacular white fireballs ranging in size from that of lemons to as big as footballs 😃

The Geminid meteor showers originate from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. According to the American Meteor Society, “Geminids are often bright and intensely colored. Due to their medium-slow velocity, persistent trains are not usually seen.” They travel at a medium speed of 35 km/second ☄️🫨

A Jackson College announcement for a December 13, 2025, Geminids Watch Party described the occasion as “one of the most active and reliable annual meteor showers, producing up to 120 bright, fast meteors per hour under ideal conditions. First observed in the mid-1800s with just a handful of meteors per hour, the Geminids have grown into a major celestial event known for their vibrant yellow streaks lighting up the winter sky.” 🎇

Fireball

The Beacon is a reflective, folk-leaning single that closes Helen’s year with stillness, warmth and emotional clarity. It blends soft acoustic textures with shimmering harmonies and a grounded, emotive vocal performance. Inspired by a quiet moment inside a cathedral—where the coloured light shifted across the floor and was attracting the attention of passers by —the track explores what it means to return to a place that recentres you. With themes of truth, calm and inner clarity, The Beacon mirrors the gentle power of coming back to yourself. 

This song was entered into the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge in 2024 and marks the start of a new musical chapter for Helen.

GUMDROP’s sound sits at the intersection of beauty and chaos; equal parts angst filled melodic darkwave and glitchy hyperpop can be found on their debut self-titled release.

The first single “Thai Angel” showcases the more nihilistic side of the duo’s sound, whereas “EYE CANDY” is pure 80’s New Wave nostalgia; both are equally dark and dreamy. Buttons’ vocals oscillate between rage driven screaming and distorted bubblegum pop vocals, an interesting juxtaposition against Shmu’s more RnB inflected vocal style, as well as unorthodox psychedelic and kaleidoscopic production. GUMDROP’s debut is no exception to Shmu’s unusual blending of styles to add new palettes and textures to an ever expanding musical universe.

Lyrical content found within spans from emotional heartache and entanglement to social unrest and the effects of late stage capitalism warping our sense of self identity. Swimming between the shallow and the deep, GUMDROP ‘s/t’ intentionally confounds and subverts musical norms with verve, aggression and a candy-like wonder. Sticky. Sweet. Aggressive.

CREDITS: I used a melody from “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” heard first from the clarinet, then piano in the outro. According to Wikipedia, the popular version of the Christmas carol was created in 1855 by the British musician William Hayman Cummings, the organist at Waltham Abbey Church. He “adapted Felix Mendelssohn’s secular music from Festgesang to fit the lyrics” that Charles Wesley had written.
