Man Power

Roam Records label boss Jason Peters is back with a new EP of psychedelic italo inspired originals. The EP opens with What Are You Saying - a mid tempo chugger featuring Jason's voice drifting over arpeggiated bass lines and electronic melodies with a bit of vocoder splashed in. The title track Little Cages picks the tempo up with a pulsating thematic drive. The EP is backed by remixes from Zillas on Acid and Club Tularosa. Zillas is up first with a gorgeous dubbed out version or What Are You Saying. Club Tularosa takes on the title track and brings the fun with an upbeat bassline and uplifting melody.

London based producer & DJ Vanity Project brings us the first in a series of ‘Leisure Tapes’ EPs – featuring four live to tape crunchy cosmic house jams, hums, clicks, hiss and all.

The EP brings influences from classic italo, acid and downtempo cosmic house, and was initially written for a new Vanity Project live set. Recorded and mixed live at Claptrap HQ with an MPC3000 as the heart of the set up and various vintage treats thumping away in it’s wake. As the first in a series of ‘Leisure Tapes’ the EP is themed around minigolf, and has amazing artwork from London based artist & maker of things Sacha Lacey.

OpenLab Live Sessions: Me Me Me Takeover

Having featured on the Riviera Disco compilation series, it’s time that Donald Dust returns to Bordello. This time the Scottish artist is back with a five-track EP in the form of Nausea. Bending ideas and styles, the Edinburgh producer serves a sample-strewn, italo-infected grenade. Hoarse vocals sully clean chords and percussion as arpeggiators grind and growl. Drum patterns stagger and stumble in the bleary-eyed house-streaked “Sick Your Own Mix” of the original. The listener is never sure where Mr Dust will take them, with influences and surprises coming in equal measure. “Noise in the Stairwell” is an electro stalker, bolts juttering and jangling in this work of vocoder-scented giallo funk. The styles continue to be melted into new sound forms on the flip with two versions of Jupiter Jack. The “Groove Mix” takes the staccato stabs of new beat and supercharges them with punishing percussion and a good helping of dancefloor devilment. Leading us into the wee hours of the after, the “Jupiter Mix” leans on the darker tones and rusted-up rhythms for a final body jack before the realisation that work starts in eight hours.

Geoff Kirkwood is an artist for the people - not so concerned with image, status or even legacy he’s a creative who is as comfortable writing or presenting experimental symphonies and Audio Visual orchestral performances as he is delivering raucous kinetic techno to sweaty dance floors. 

Filling the spaces between his eclectic output, Kirkwood's work as Man Power has become some of his most meaningful and potent. The project began all the way back in 2014 as an anonymous series of dark remixes which culminated in a debut EP on Correspondant. Via his Man Power alias, Geoff has since gone on to show the complete picture of his sonic breadth via output for the likes of DFA, SKINT, Hivern Discs and his self-helmed Me Me Me imprint. Not just satisfied with making music, his acclaimed Us & Them parties have been reversing the grubby trends of club-night promotion, ditching advance tickets and corporate mentality in place for a focus on regional talent regardless of profile. 

Recorded live in Newcastle while opening for Leftfield's tour earlier this month, this DMY mix shows Man Power's selector skills at their very best. Spanning over two hours in length, strap in for a real journey from start to finish.

Crazy P(enis) will be forever associated with the glory days of Paper Recordings. As the acid house fever dream started to fade, a new generation of ravers took the ball and ran with it for a more groove-driven sound. The band and label were part of the pack.

Paper Recordings first met Jim, Chris and Tim when they were fresh off the boat from North Wales and Nottingham, with a sampler tucked under their arms and a bag full of amazing demos. The first release soon led to their album, 'A Nice Hot Bath With...', which wrote the blueprint for what would become known as nu-disco. Sample heavy and great musicianship fed by late nights on the dance floors of Manchester made it an instant classic.

The band grew with the addition of Danielle Moore's lead vocals and star power. On their next album, The Wicked Is Music', the sound consolidated into the one that has gone on to conquer the world. House, disco, broken beats, funk and pop are all mixed into a heady mix of forward facing dance music.

The Early Years compilation charts their rise from of their early catalogue of ground-breaking productions.

The A track on Andy Hart's newest Voyage 12", "Neutron", is a hardware driven cut driven by its ever-present and acid-tinged bassline. 808 drums lay the foundation underneath, while galactic synths and effects layer in to accentuate the affair. It's a bit more stripped-back at times than the producer's Mistress In Your Mind EP -- also on Voyage -- but a logical progression in sound. The B-Side, meanwhile, hosts the clubbier, pulsing "LFTR". Again, the 303 influence and sci-fi feel appears, but in a higher energy format meant to rock the dancefloor.
