The difficulty with language is that it can be hard to articulate, decipher and change. What is said cannot be erased and taken back, it stands firm in the passage of time for a life to come. This is why such holy books have paved the way across the ages, they cannot be taken back. Nowadays it is all about a turn of phrase, depicting what may come next and rephrasing that which was mistaken. Perhaps in the future we will learn better, and take our time. 

Teniente Castillo is set to release a new EP on Playpal Music. Operating out of Madrid he creates tripped out electronic music rife with drive and bass. He is remixed by Undo.

Exklusive Sigward - Balmung Beam

Currently residing in Berlin Dutch producer Sigward makes his return to Nuno Dos Santos' label Something Happening Somewhere, short SoHaSo. The follow-up EP of Black Mambo, which was released in 2014, is named Balmung Beam and comes along with four original tracks and a remix by DL/MS/ for the title track. But even though it's been almost six years since Sigward's last EP on SoHaSo was released, the artists remained part of the label family contributing tunes like Moonface Oracle, Keithii to the compilations Somewhere and Somewhere III and also delivered a track called Vertical River for the label's Nowhere 01 potpourri in 2018. So two years after the latter Sigward drops Balmung Beam, an alliteration, which is named after Sigurd's, Siegfried in German, sword in Norwegian and German mythology. And the track title does what its name suggests or what its intended name contains, namely mystic and sharp chords that cut through the sound-woods and create an eerie yet charming feel, which not only ties you physically to the dance floor but also mentally as the track itself provides as shelter the listener can and wants to get lost in.

Sigward's EP Balmung Beam will be released on Something Happening Somewhere on March 13th, 2020.

Two decades. Twenty years. Twenty compilations. Over 400 tracks. Over two days of total playing time and countless coloured dots. If someone would have told us in 1999, when we put together TOTAL 1 that this would turn into one of the longest standing compilation series in techno world we would have laughed out loud. But here we are – in the year 2020 which will probably go down in history as the most difficult period ever for club culture. But we won’t stop doing what we’re doing. Music is our oxygen. We’ll dance together soon again.

The TOTAL series has always been like KOMPAKT’s yearbook and to say it with the late Frank Sinatra: It was a very good year. Our family of artists delivered a strong heterogeneous mix of uplifting sounds, from the lush reveries of ROBAG WRUHME and SOELA to the stark primetime bangers of MARC ROMBOY or ANNA & KITTIN and everything in between. Notable new entries to our crew are the Londoner KIWI with his wonderfully careless “Hello Echo” that picks up the camp disco vibes Justus Köhncke made a staple in our repertoire. Amsterdam’s DAVID DOUGLAS delivers an appetizer for a full course meal. His quirky pop approach sits comfortably between fellow dutchmen WEVAL’s abstract beats and AGENTS OF TIME’s opulent Italo Disco. YOTAM AVNI blends Detroit techno with new age jazz that reminisces the sound of ECM artists like Jan Garbarek or John Surman. The man with the hat, KÖLSCH also picks up jazzier notes in his very own big room style. Youngblood JONATHAN KASPAR appears twice, fortifying his status as one of the hottest beat smiths of our hometown Cologne. TOTAL wouldn’t be TOTAL without our permanent staff present in full force. As per tradition, KOMPAKT’s founding fathers, VOIGT & VOIGT, JÜRGEN PAAPE, JÖRG BURGER, MICHAEL MAYER as well as our Berlin outpost SASCHA FUNKE all deliver exclusive gems that also feature on Total 20’s double vinyl edition.
