20 years ago I released Last Train to Lhasa - which makes me feel very old!

To mark the anniversary of its release, I have created a limited edition, physical only (no downloads or streams) 4 disc box set, featuring previously unheard alternative and extended ambient mixes as well as a handful of fresh remixes by like-minded artists. This will come out in June.

To kick-start the celebrations, I asked Ukraine’s soundcloud.com/astropilot and Dublin’s soundcloud.com/silinder to add some 21st Century flavour to the title track, and released them on Monday 30th March via all the mainstream download stores and streaming sites.

To mark this release, I am posting up this remix that I did myself of Lhasa. Please share the link far and wide.

**Production Notes**

A year ago, we replaced our fridge. It was frosty, grumpy, mean and extremely loud fridge, which started to scream just when the family sat down at the kitchen table. So we decided to get a ultra-super-ultrasonic-quiet one. Good for our ears, bad for this assignment. 

I started with a field recording on full levels, but there was … nothing. I left the fridge open for a minute, so finally I got a slight hum. Not very convincing. So I took a device for recording electromagnetic fields and went over the fridge for a minute. Voila, noise galore. 

Next, I let Ableton extract the harmonies of these electromagnetic pulses. I added Kontakt Una Corda and several plugins from Applied Acoustic Systems. 

The result reminded me somehow of Alva Noto somehow, standing in front of our old fridge, grabbing a beer.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0224: Cold Embrace**

Make music with the sound of a refrigerator as its foundation.

This week’s project was inspired, in part, by an April 13, 2016, talk that the artist Jeff Kolar gave to students in the class on sound that I teach.

Step 1: Record the sound of a refrigerator, preferably the one in your own kitchen.

Step 2: Listen to the recording to get a sense of the hum, the tonality, and the rhythm or rhythms inherent in that audio.

Step 3: Create an original piece of music augmenting that tonality and rhythm. It’s preferable you simple add material to the field recording, but you can also use the field recording as source material.

Step 7: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 8: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Step 9: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This project was posted in the afternoon, California time, on Thursday, April 14, 2016, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, April 18, 2016.

Length: The length is up to you, though between one and three minutes feels about right.

Dmytro Kolosovskiy aka Sky Technology is well known Ukraine psychedelic trance producer who comes from Kiew, born in 1982. His main style is melodic goa trance, tracks with powerful beat, full of energy, ethno motives, spiced all with acid sounds. He also makes very powerful and emotional downtempo-ambient music. So far he has released couple of EP, 2 full length albums, numerous tracks on various compilations, he has done also some compilations. From this talented artist we can expect soon to be released new downtempo album and new singles.

Psybientum - Indigo

We need hope in times of darkness; a light to shine through to part the clouds. 

Made over the last 2/3 days, working with just the MIDI provided. The original track seemed like a synthetic orchestra in a way, so I tried to stick with that in mind with the sound design in the beginning then I’m not sure where it goes, some sort of frenetic sonic love poem to the European Union.

Not entirely sure what to add, I've just listened to it far too many times now.

Side note, my computer glitched out the entire time whilst remixing squarepusher... Ironic Dance Music
