Following a frantic slew of actions with his unrelenting cyber grind band Duma, the Nairobi-based risktaker Sam Karugu strikes with a knockout clash of tumultuous riff pulp, blown out matatu rides capturing the discombobulated infoxication of intercontinental treks in the digital wasteland.

Karugu’s reputation precedes him as one of Kenya’s most dextrous sonic ritualists, not to mention one of its most collaborative hardcore spirits, with a handful of inimitable blasts with his bands Duma, and Usura among a wad of other joint operations in the city’s vibrant and diverse underground. Karugu is true to the word experimental — equally welding together traditional African polyrhythms, trve Nordic riff infamies, blending real life experience subliminalities and incendiary industrial-grade breakcore for the eschaton — all things are concrète and plasticine, lo tech yet hypermodern.

Looking forward to his keenly-awaited solo debut, Karugu has prepared us a convulsing live jam taking us through a thick bog of smeared grind as No Tree Forest with 7headc0 and “Rot” Samanda of shamanic black metal legends Chovu; thrilling snippets into Slammy’s live set at last year’s Nyege Nyege; a shattered psychogeographic snapshot into the freeform chaos of Nairobi’s street atmos with its manic street preachers (the real deal); unhinged and molten smartphone recordings from the local metal scene; geophone recordings all the way from Scotland; getting down into a duo with a drum machine and stethoscoping the artist’s own heartbeat… Break the loop and tear apart the barriers dumbing us down.
