We've some psychedelic Bollywood for starters before rolling through Rush, Sonic Youth, J. J. Cale, and Hound Dog Taylor. Before spacing out on a stoned masterpiece from Jimi Hendrix. A couple of covers before brand new David Holmes, late period John Martyn, a Nordic pick from my niece, and bubbly house from Seven Davis Jr and Four Tet. Before a stunning version of a classic work in its own right, a lesser played rave anthem, and a heady tech cut from Josh Wink to close.

Beginning with one of *the* bossa nova tracks by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 we went places, but seemed to orbit, quite unplanned, around a lot of 70s era music this week. In amongst it all, music from Charlie Parker, Mingus, and Gillespie, Maps, Gwenno, Led Zeppelin, XTC, The Flaming Lips, ABC, Pink Floyd, Amyl and the Sniffers, Liz Frazer's new project, Shocking Blue, and two covers of the Four Tops. Plus, Laibach covering the Sound of Music, and one of the best earworms out there.

Mornings with Darkfloor - November 23, 2023

As the sun shone into the studio it felt like a good time to play some house – beginning with Pépé Bradock, we rolled into Mark Broom’s Kingpin Cartel, before settling on Larry Heard’s Mr. Fingers.

From there the jazz fusion of Al Di Meola, Victor Wooten, bassist for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, and the tale of Tubby the Tuba. We go deep with Leftfield, Kareem Ali, and Steve von Till, before playing the full 12 minutes of Rufige Kru’s Hornet 127.

Following a brief detour via The Fall, the rest of the show orbits around indie folk, pop, electronica, and Cuban sounds. With music from Destroyer, Lp Giobbi, Panda Bear, Ry Cooder, Skullcrusher, Smalltown Supersound, and Beth Orton. Closing with one of my favourite tracks by Killing Joke. RIP Geordie Walker.

Mornings with Darkfloor - November 30, 2023

Hey all. So this edition of the show is bittersweet, as like many of you, I'm dealing with the death of Steve Albini. A person who has had a HUGE impact on the music many of us love. His death has hit hard, harder than I would have expected but that is the power of sound I suppose. It impacts you deeper than you think.

Albini's career of work is large, and I've just scratched the surface here. I hope that I've introduced you to some new artists and sounds, whilst reminding you of others. Big thanks out to everyone who suggested tracks.

Producing a special like this - trying to sum up the career of a musician and engineer whose work has been across so much sound that has in turn made up a chunk of my understanding and enjoyment of sound is always gonna fall short. But it has been cathartic putting this together, and broadcasting it as I have. 

You could spend many hours on just one of the many, many bands he worked with. Let alone his own material as Big Black, and Shellac. And I suggest you should.
