London record shop and label Phonica Records launches new sub label Phonica AM. Curated by staff member and DJ Luther Vine, the label will provide a home for a new take on 90's inspired ‘proper’ tech house, and music within this ball park. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

To kick start this new label, Luther approached the mysterious duo Voodoos and Taboos to release 'If We Were' EP. So far, the two producers have only released EPs and LPs on their own record label Voodoos And Taboos Records, and made few appearances on compilations. We don't know a lot about them - not even their face - but the music speak for itself. "I was blown away by the music after discovering their production through stocking their first two releases," said Luther. Indeed, it is not until he heard their tunes that he took the decision to start a new Phonica imprint. "With all due respect to some of the music being released at the moment, there seems to be an over saturation with this rehashed 90s Prog House resurgence... And it was very refreshing to hear and be able to release this rather original EP from Voodoos and Taboos." Hailing from Uruguay, with his roots firmly embedded in the Montevidean scene, Marcos Coya has been influenced by Uruguayan pioneers Bruno Gervais, Nicolas Lutz, and DJ Koolt. 

Djing since 2002,  Coya has shared the booth with local Uruguayan heroes Z@P, DJ Koolt, Bruno Gervais, Nicolas Lutz, Emilio, Omar, Two Phase U, and Luis Malon, in addition to playing with international artists Ben Rau, DJ T., and Guido Schneider, to name a few.
Coya has released on vinyl and digital labels such as Melisma, Ruta5, Ouzomusic, Alien Imprints, Gas Recordings, Aurea, and many more.

Deep Sleep Robot has unearthed a new record label based out of NYC focussed on digging through the past and bringing light to unreleased gems and overlooked gems that were produced between 1990 - 2004. Deep Sleep Robot has their crew digging crates and vaults all over the world seeking out timeless and rarer than rare music for those unique dance floor moments. Kicking things off with a three-tracker from none other than Len Lewis "The Orbalisk EP". Len Lewis is already a regular on the infamous UK tech-house label Swag Records, and a deep back catalog of trusted DJ gems spanning back to the '90s. All tracks were produced by Len Lewis between the years of 1999-2001, timeless and rarer than rare, don't sleep on this one!

I met Connor upon my return from Romania and he, among a few others I met, brought me straight back in to what I call, the good side of being in Britain.  These youngsters are extremely cultured and knowledgeable about music in general but mostly, UK music. Bringing me back straight to my home base. 

Connor's background is rooted in jungle free parties, a genre he used to also play during University times in Nottingham, in this period  he had a residency at Stealth. Later, over the years he switched to more 4x4 genres by playing jungle records at 33rpm rather than 45rpm.  At the tender age of 18 he played under the alias  'Malebox' - a disco duo with one of his closest friends where he was a resident of Shut The Front Door, a monthly party at Jamm Brixton.  It was also under this alias and his solo one that he was a resident of The Cause in London.

In 2020, Connor creates Serenity Records.  A new not-for-profit record label, aimed at raising essential awareness on the growing epidemic of mental health within the music industry, whilst also donating all proceeds of its project to various mental health charities. One of the key features of the project is to allow the artists commissioned for each EP to have the opportunity to select the particular charity that their work will support. Releases so far bring John Shima, Anna Wall, Thoma Bulwer and Innershades. 

I feel that this 1hr set that Connor recorded for us sums up all of the above beautifully, certainly a feature I want to see in artists, especially younger ones like him. Ones that honour all their influences without neglecting anything or jumping on the “current hype”.  Fascinating enough, all of the above can be heard in this elegantly built set.
