German  newcomer  Ausschus  debuts  on  Haunter  Records  with  a  6-track  offering,  throwing  in  elements  from  the  whole  spectrum  of  contemporary  experimental  music.  The  subtle  yet  intense  melodic  work,  put  in  a  place  of  dangerous  acoustic  creatures  (bit-crushed  drones,  metallic  clangs,  slow  hard  beats),  allows  him  to  explore  both  negative  and  positive  affections.  The  main  goal  is  dominance—or  rather,  positive  acceptance—of  melancholia,  using  harsh  frequencies  as  a  crucible  for  one’s  psyche,  teaching  how  to  stand  amidst  the  noise,  breathing  it,  accepting  it  as  nutrition.  It’s  not  a  matter  of  riffing  against  listeners,  but  of  accompanying  them  through  different  rooms,  different  states,  and  molding  them  according  to  their  will  and  sensibility.  Ausschuss’  use  of  space,  reverb  and  harmony  gives  solidity  to  the  sound,  creating  a  proper  environment  in  which  insight  and  growth  can  happen  freely.

Haron’s Taxa EP dips into a world of fizzing electronics and draws from it four potent club mutations.

Having explored spacious ambient on 2018’s well-received Wandelaar, the Dutch producer turns his attention towards full-body rhythms. These newly prepared compositions, the first club release on Queeste, are dappled with synthesised colour and unexpected timbral shifts, aligning the producer with global bass permutations while maintaining his own playful course.

The skittering dancefloor percussion of opening track ‘Drosera’ immediately signals this change in direction, leading effortlessly into the tightly coiled drums of ‘Benthos’ whose name is taken from the community of organisms that dwell on the seabed. In a nod to Wandelaar’s serene tones, the track ends with weightless ambience alongside snippets of human voices, a single moment of stillness on a release elsewhere defined by movement. ‘Pantala’ is pristine computerised dancehall teeming with disembodied samples and impressionistic swirls of noise before Taxa ends with ‘Pincertail’ whose bustling syncopations recall UK funky at its nimblest.

No less evocative than his beatless work, on this EP Haron has crafted his own idiosyncratic abstraction of club music, one imbued with joyful melodies and a giddy, pleasingly destabilising sensibility.

EP 31: POWER STRIP (Simon Denny)

Victor Metske is a Rotterdam-based electronic musician, who is normally known for his energetic club-ready style of production and for the label Bound Centre, which he co-founded with Ice Viper, Imhotel & Ezra V. On katharsis, he presents a more introspective and thoughtful side of himself with his EP “In The Midst Of Things”, which seems to stem from this weird year of isolation and quarantine. 

The 4 tracks of the EP send us on a contemplative journey through our feelings, spanning from the blissful pads on the beautiful opener “Flour On Her Feet” to the more disturbing and anxious plucked strings on “First Sight”. Metske states the following about the release:

“In the midst of things, in between life changing events and entirely new daily routines there were small moments where I could sit down and reflect. The four tracks of this EP were created in these small pockets of time. During the pregnancy of my girlfriend, after the birth of our son, at the arrival of a global crisis. 

Melodic and atmospheric elements previously hidden in my send channels have been braving the foreground of my productions for a while now. But more recently I've been able to use these elements to translate the weight of recent events directly into some of my music. All four tracks represent very personal abstract feelings that I could never put to words.

Within these four tracks I can hear feelings of joy, love, doubt and melancholy scream back at me. I can hear myself settling into a new world, struggling with relinquishing control and discovering calmth.”

All of the wired melodies, funny records, sudden drums are saying “not taking it too serious”, let you not wail like a baby when you break everything due to an inexplicable fall. A humorous language, hidden in every sound from Sell to Horserider. So far, there is still no mystery in this EP, it simply provides us with all the functions that every dance music should have; of course, just for mature bastards.
