This month's mixtape opens with an intimate archival recording from the 1970s by an anonymous Czech outsider-folk singer who calls for an immediate end to animal cruelty. Around the constant repetition of a fragment from a poem by the anti-fascist Spanish poet Miguel Hernández, Katya Shirshkova and Yura Kuznetsov gradually deconstructs their composition. 

Liis Ring's pulsating ambient questions the true meaning of home, while the wailing sound of Elina Bolshenkova's accordion in On Hold is a testament to its true worth. Brno's Sky to Speak creates miniatures that move in between library music and tropicalia in their song Feather Palms. All this wrapped in a freshly released field recording featuring the works of Belgrade-born Manja Ristić, Toronto-based Alëna Korolëva and Prague-Berlin duo Veronika Svobodová and Pia Achternkamp.

I hear Brazilian singers. 
Clearly. 
And clearly they are not there. 
The music seems convinced of the presence of Brazilian singers. 
That was my first coherent thought after listening to Newfoundout 
Now. 
And clearly. 
In what must be a profound list of instruments or sound sources heard on this record, 
I doubt we will find Milton Nascimento, Nana Caymmi, or Maria Bethânia. 
I hallucinated them. 
Clearly. 
Because hallucinations are clear. 
And there is a lot of hallucinating going on here. 
The music hallucinates itself. 
And leaves space for us to hallucinate along with it. 
The instruments play, and they play wildly, in a state of hallucination. 
The music slides in a slow and light state of relocation. 
This is a balade. 
And as we sway we may notice things, they may come to us, 
often only for mere seconds before evaporating in a clear decay. 
The hallucination is the space in between us and the music. 
The space, ever-modulating, of the encounter itself. 
An encounter constantly and slowly composing and decomposing, 
forming and deforming and sensually blurring the lines in between. 
A clear haze.

The music guts and lushes without rising or falling. 
This is not an orchestra 
This is not a paragraph. 
A bordel of instruments. 
Clumps of moss. 
Stretched out like rubber bands. 
They sway. 
Flat on the ground. 
Hanging under a tree. 
A band in a hammock. 
In the grass. 
They are squatting in the heat. 
This music thinks birds sing just for joy. 
A radical obedience of joy. 
There is a rub. 
This is some kind of rubbing music. 
Everything breaths here. 
Khartum 
Tropical lungs. Steamy courtyard. A clear sweetnighter.

Over the last decade, Toronto-based composer Nick Storring has become well known for his unique, painstaking compositional style of layering performances on a plethora of objects and musical/electro-mechanical instruments to deeply moving effect. ‘Newfoundout’, his seventh album, follows last year’s lush and nocturnal ‘My Magic Dreams Have Lost Their Spell’ (Orange Milk Records) with more rhythmical material and an almost theatrical, phantasmal sensibility. The music here doesn’t just evoke imagined landscapes or unique sonic worlds, but it seems to be toying with the idea of a protagonist or a narrative. The pieces move with intent, unravelling in their course moving tales, haunting ancient stories and whispered rumours. There is an underlying aura of mystery and ghostliness which is also reflected in the track titles: all are named after ghost towns around Ontario, Canada. ‘Newfoundout’ is a truly fascinating new entry in Storring’s discography; one which not only highlights his strengths and refines his approach, but also showcases the breadth of his vision. It’s an album where hyperrealism meets psychedelia, where strange dreams meet cinematic grandeur.

In memory of Vojtěch Havel, we explore the world of this influential Czech composer, improviser, and performer, known for his legendary duo with Irena Havlová. His music spans a wide range, from minimalism and ambient to renaissance and baroque music, as well as film scores, drone experiments, and touches of new age. Vojtěch had a unique ability to bridge different generations of listeners. 

Since the mid-80s, he and Irena pushed boundaries between love, life, and music. Even in his final days, Vojtěch collaborated with a diverse array of artists from the Czech and Slovak experimental scene. Their work also resonated far beyond the borders of Czechoslovakia, attracting fans that include artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Stephan Micus, and the Dessner brothers from The National.

Julek ploski’s ‘Give up Channel’ is on mappa. It’s the follow-up to the Poland-based FL Studio demon’s ‘Hotel *****’, released via Orange Milk in 2023.

It’s an album that wrestles against a shadow self. It’s about shelter from the hailstorm of unwanted memories and guilt pangs and serrated blades of thought. It’s about clinging on to some semblance of hope, knuckles taut and teeth gritted.

The fragmented drift of opener ‘Naysayer’ flows forward like an anxious daydream, pad eddies and piano plinks anchored by Trapaholics drops and bursts of guaracha drums. It’s a mess of mind: the bleakness of ‘Truth’ is punctuated by gun cocking and bullet spray and sudden jester-like blasts of unhinged, schizo-whimsical melody. An internal war without a clear winner.

Shame snakes through this music like venom through an emaciated body. Blue screenlight in a dark bedroom, pulsating temples, lockjaw. ‘Titanic’ hits like the thrashing resistance of a being built for love grappling against the scalding vengefulness it’s forced to contend with, the song’s abstracted rave synths giving way to warped voices and spiralling derangement. ‘Hollywood’ is a scarred battleground, the martial bludgeoning of a tightly wound hardstyle stomp blistering and shredding a delicate piano-and-string arrangement.

This music is about deep solitude, a meditation on simmering, slow-marinating hatred. But it’s ultimately about prevailing. It doesn’t revel in negativity, it roils and twists and writhes against it. Dots of light in oppressive darkness. Clarity and purpose against chaos and filth. It’s a struggle worth waging.
