A song dedicated to my grandmother Winnie and our epic Scrabble sessions...

My beautiful grandma Winnie’s right inside my front pocket
Her spirit comes to me whenever I take a call on my digital locket
You see I downloaded the Scrabble app to my phone
And now when I turn it on I’m transported back in time to her home

We’d always play the best of three
Sitting in her lounge playing along to the sounds of her Rank Arena TV

It was a constant parade of tea and homemade biscuits
And in the summertime the soundtrack would be 80’s one-day cricket…Boony!

Sometimes neighbour Jean would come over and play
She’d settle in, pull out her Benson & Hedges and puff away

We’d fight the urge to cough and choke
But Winnie would never complain
Just wink sideways at me over the joke

Oh thank you modern age for freeing those memories from their cage
Because now every single time I play I utter my beautiful grandmother’s name

Oh thank you Winnie for all of those beautiful times and days
They’re something I carry with me every single day
Lifting me up and putting a big old wide smile on my face
Your eternal kindness and love is still here and resonates

I’ll put the kettle on Nan while you set up the board
And I’m a little tired, do you mind keeping score
And have you got that little list written by your older sis
Full of those crazy two letter words

I don’t think they’re real or allowed
But I’m not at all that proud
And my god they’re so much fun to play!
