When it comes to electronic music, the Bavarian city Ingolstadt is a rather a placid spot. Nevertheless, there are protagonists like Sigi Housner who flies the flag of Techno and fights for the collective idea of underground for more than two decades now. Through his visions and devotion for music he built his own world. High-quality output is not a coincidence, but a result of sustained work and fascination for creating. He lived through several aliases and projects, founded a label, and became one of the resident Djs in berlins legendary Tresor Club at the event series “Foreplay”. So Techno is much more than just a hobby for him – it´s his attitude to life!
Sigi found his way to the music in his youth through a classical music education, where he learned to play several instruments like keyboard and different drums. At the age of 15, he started to listen to some Acid-Mixtapes which were recorded at the (ex-)Ultraschall club in Munich. Infected by this new kind of music he visited the club almost weekly, as well as the record store Optimal in Munich. Live-Performances like the ones of Acid Junkies awoke an even higher enthusiasm in him for synthesizer and other hardware devices.
His first turntables were a present from his mother in 1996, which he gained in exchange for the removal of a piercing. From then nothing stood in the way of Sigi alias DJ Cube, and the local scene was served with breakbeat and techno records as well as with his personal foible for the electro-subgenre called “No-Future”. With his Klirrfaktor event series and numerous gigs at the honorable Treibhaus club he earned transregional reputation.
In 2004 private reasons caused him to retreat into his new equipped homestudio with an armada of analogue devices. His old big dream of becoming a Live-Act revived and the permanent contact to Subhead and Dave Tarrida finally lead him to perform as “TUNEBOX“ in 2006. This is also the name of his label, which he launched together with his wife one year later. His release debut under the name „Sigi Housner“ he celebrated on the „Various Bombtists“ (Bombtrap) with the track „Lawazza“ though, before he took off on his own imprint with four further tracks and a title by Dave Tarrida & Tobias Schmidt. In 2010 followed Tunebox 02 called „Subbox EP“ by Subhead and Jason Leach, as well as two tracks by himself. When Phil Wells, one member of he Subhead duo, passed away, it also heralded the end for the „No-Future-Sound“, as he was a powerful and influencial force for the genre. This meant as well that the focus and musical basics of Tunebox Records collapsed and Sigi didn’t see good reasons to go on for that. The small scene split up and the genre disappeared from the screen. The Live-Act project Tunebox retained by performances like in Distillery Club in Leipzig, Tresor Club Berlin and some other venues.
Time for re-orientation. Peter Berg, intiatior of the Spreekader collective (Berlin), motivated Sigi to play at these events and a residency at the weekly series FOREPLAY“ in the globally known Tresor Club Berlin followed, which generated international attention. Also in Ingolstadt he gained a new residency at the colourful „People Like Us“-Partys. A musically stilistic transition was the result: at the core it turns around driven techhouse. Deeply sophisticated basslines and his former love for acid are the charakteristics of his sound.
One thing crossed like a veil through his carreer – his passion for music and the open-mind to change. Musically always on the search of the new, the unknown and the surprise of tomorrow. No matter what moods or emotions shall be transferred with music, he found his way to communicate these. He finds hapiness in sharing. Happy faces on the dancefloor are his engine and the collective expirience stands in the first row – the sense of unity.
