He is definitely one of the primary rocks among Cologne’s Techno scene. The way he uses his broad experience and combines it with the pulse and zeitgeisty sounds makes Marcel Janovsky not only an outstanding DJ, but also a successful label owner of Treibstoff, producer and organiser.

It all started in the 1980s when 14-years-old Marcel listened to Kraftwerk’s ‘Boing Boum Tschak’. The electronic music fever caught him almost immediately and he decided to exchanged his drums for a proper drum machine. And from this moment on, Marcel has been dedicating his life to the beat and the dance floor.

For a DJ, the main objective is to combine your very own style with the Zeitgeist and the tools available. And you will only succeed if you constantly nourish your passion and variety of activities from a wealth of experience: Marcel Janovsky was the first who came up with the early, hot Chicago records at school parties. Later, in the early 1990s, he scratched in one of the first German Hip Hop bands. And he vividly experienced the Big Bang of German Techno music when the Berlin wall came down. Thanks to this unique, authentic style pool, Marcel’s DJ sets are always precise as well as courageous; he combines the past and the future of state-of-the-art dance music thus creating a presence full of perfect rhythms and sensuality.

Since he founded his own label Treibstoff together with Rene Breitbarth in 1997, Marcel Janovsky actually is one of the most dynamic key figures among Cologne’s Techno scene: his own productions as well as the intense label work in the last couple of years prove Marcel to be a highly competent and pleasant promoter of both, unknown as well as famous acts. And the party crowd adores him for being a great organiser, booker and resident DJ of Treibstoff events taking place at one of the best underground locations in Cologne. Marcel Janovsky knows a vast number of DJs and live acts from his own DJ gigs at the best clubs all over the world.

And there is hardly any other protagonist in the world of Techno music who can do the splits between the international and local stage in such a perfect, smooth and laid-backway as Marcel Janovsky does it. But in fact, the one would not be possible without the other.

Diego Hostettler can easily be declared a true classic, and that‘s not only due to his pleasantly functional productions, whose only luxury seems to be a gentle nod to Detroit. Also, his discography reveals him to be an usual suspect of the electronic family, having released several hits on Kanzleramt, one of Germany‘s most classical techno labels. True to his style, the modestly named Diego is no man for lofty speeches, as the beat is his message. For his premiere on Treibstoff though, the Swiss extended his pallet and integrated several flavors of funk into his set-up, extending the well-lubricated machinery and producing brilliant results. This record is a loveletter and an indispensable tool for all those DJs, that still take their job seriously. And who haven‘t forgotten about their roots: the club. January 2014 a dvd-documentation has been produced and released by Achim Rütt (Artigfilm) and i´ve played a special classic set at the film-premiere party in Cologne. It was much fun doing the journey with all the people who have the same history as i had - more than 20 years Techno. The party went really really crazy and the old rave-feeling was back! Rodriguez Jr. – Orinoco/Omicron (Back To Fundamentals)

Claude Monnet’s groundbreaking ‘Back to Fundamentals’ visionary project, gets off in true style as flamboyant French house maestro ‘Rodriguez Jr.’, gets the prestigious call-up to deliver the very first sonic installment. “Orinoco/Omicron” and its carefully thought-out remix package, secheduled for release on Claude’s very own B2F label sets the tone for the whole endeavor, and will proudly feature on the final compilation “Back to Fundamentals: Act 2 – The Nouvelle Vague” in Febraury next year.

Quite a task one may think, but it seems perfectly clear Rodriguez Jr. is treating the project with the respect that it deserves as he steps up to the plate and delivers what can only be described as a first rate slice of groove fuelled disco-house. Deep, moody and techy, yet staying true to a certain playfulness throughout, the whole release explores the diversity and experimentalism that has presented itself so masterfully throughout the last two decades of French underground music – a scene for which Claude Monnet himself has become such a valuable patron and benefactor. 

With “Orinoco” Rodriguez Jr. manages to produce a truly luscious amalgamation of subtle, understated, retro sounds, samples and beats – nothing short of an indulgence for the ear. “Omicron” on the other hand explores a more progressive, melodic and technical path, with futuristic influences and a pinpointed innovative and inventive flare. The diversity of each contributes to an undeniably worthy first edition to Claude Monnet’s Back to Fundamentals brainchild. If things carry on in the same vein, we are in for one hell of a final piece early in 2012, so stay tuned because there’s much more where this came from on its way…

Giuliano Rodrigues is back with his second solo EP on Lucidflow! A young talent from Brazil who has continuously enthused us with his brilliant minimalistic techno and driving rhythms.  The EP leads off with label boss’ Helmut Ebritsch remix on Unimaginable which lives up to its name - a bouncy number that opens up a whole bag of tricks over its duration. First digging itself into a dark hole with a shuffling rhythm, a cheeky synth lifts the mood before crunchy bass is deployed to snap the floor into step. These elements casually drift together to create a teasing finale that will keep the floor guessing to the last.  Unwavering is a dirty, dark, brooding and spacious track for never ending underground adventures. Constantly building, the warm low end's gentle insistence pushes against the hips while skittering percussion gives momentum to it's majestic pulse.  The marching, mechanical feel of Look At Me with its tight drum programming will get people out of their seats, unaware of what is to come. With the dancing set in motion, intoxicated vocal snippets swarm around the low end to create both a twitchy funk and tripped out effect.   Feeling The Space takes its time to unfold and chooses deep darkness as its motif, appropriate for the darker of the phenomenon; it gradually grows with prominence to a subdued crest before fading as it appeared. Last but not least the title track is the most typical of Lucidflow releases, heavily dub house influenced with sharp and intricate percussion that has a twinkle in its eye.  Each track on the package takes hold of the senses in a different way, twisting them so that time becomes an afterthought. Available 20.6.2016

A match made in heaven: after a multitude of releases on labels like Ware, Sound Architecture or Third Wave, Philogresz a.k.a Ilker Soylu finally joins the Treibstoff family. Nearly feeling like an age-old friendship, the Dutchman‘s complex, yet straightforward grooves blend in smoothly with the label sound. Still, the artist explores new grounds with this one, sending his sound through the wind tunnel and swearing the tiniest acoustic details to the floor. One can still hear the jazzy past, but even those influences went all the way from mere ornamentation to functional pizazz. Having a background as studio manager and labelhead of Secret Cinema‘s Team Records may have helped Philogresz more than not, as one finds him maintaining the focus here, instead of losing himself in muddy plug-in mania like so many others do.
