Tel Aviv’s Deep’a & Biri and Iran-born producer Aril Brikha will unite on a forthcoming 12″ on Deep’s & Biri’s Black Crow label, from which proceeds will be donated to an Israel/Palestine peace projects organization. Titled ‘Hope’, the release was inspired by Brikha’s first visit to Israel to play at the Black Crow party in Tel Aviv, after years of turning down gig offers in the country in what Brikha describes as his own “quiet protest” in solidarity with Palestine.

With their shared love for the deeper sounds of Detroit techno (Derrick May’s Transmat label, on which Brikha released the timeless ‘Groove La Chord’ and Deep’a & Biri have a released a track last year, remains a key link between their respective approaches to music), Brikha’s collaboration with Deep’a & Biri on the second Black Crow EP was the logical next step to follow the duo’s 2013 debut LP ‘Emotions Visions Changes’ on DJ Hell’s International DJ Gigolos. The 12″ features both acts contributing an original track and remix, with Brikha’s signature melodic progressions and Deep’a & Biri’s dub techno atmospherics brought to bear on each side.

The closure of fabric has seen a reaction that has been completely humbling and overwhelming to all of us on the team here, from over 150,000 signing a petition of support to raising in excess of £300,000 in donations to help our legal fight.

Support has come from every corner of the industry, with fundraising events at a number of different venues being held up and down the UK. This response perfectly encapsulates everything the electronic music community represents.

Both fabric Records and our artist led label Houndstooth decided a release that embodies this spirit would be a further powerful way to demonstrate the collective power of our community. We asked artists associated with both labels to donate a track to the cause, needing to act fast we gave a deadline of just 3 weeks in total, from inception to final master. The brief was simple, we asked for a previously unreleased track, either brand new or an alternative version of an old classic.

The response has been far greater than we could have ever anticipated, with an array of amazing artists delivering stunning tracks. Given this generosity every track that has been submitted is featured on the release, meaning an incredible 111 tracks make up the final running order, presented in alphabetical order.

Due to touring and time constraints many more artists could and would have like to have been involved, and we can’t give enough thanks to all the labels that have generously allowed their artists to contribute.

In the era of the playlist, this compilation represents a comprehensive overview of electronic music from the outer fringes of experimental explorations right through to music aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

Ahead of the court date which will determine the long term future of fabric nightclub we’d like to present this compilation as a document of this moment in time but also as the perfect embodiment of everything fabric is and stands for.

To celebrate 20 years since inception, Sven Väth’s Cocoon Recordings is serving up a special 15 track collection that brings together new and exclusive music from artists that have been a huge part of the journey. Presented as a deluxe 6 x 12" box set with a silver foil cover and paper insert with individual sleeves and luminescent paint, this is a suitably spectacular collection that pays homage to one of techno's finest operations. 20 years is a long time in any facet of life, but in techno it is eons. The genre evolves so quickly that staying relevant for even half that time is some achievement, so to still be recognised as one of the genre's most iconic and influential labels after such an extended period is testament to the vision of its founder Sven Väth. The popular character, much loved DJ and always innovative creative force started out with an early rave techno sound back in the late eighties that he has steered into much broader realms ever since. Marc Houle has been wowing audiences for over a decade with a live performance that is constantly evolving night after night, in city after city, at clubs and festivals worldwide. The skill and effort that goes into creating these truly 'live' sets is the result of an entire lifetime dedicated to electronic music and a deep love of the machines that make it.
Raised adjacent to Detroit in Windsor, Ontario, in the same fertile music community that spawned Richie Hawtin, Houle’s obsession with electronic sounds goes back to the noise of ’80s video games and vintage synthesizers. And while too many electronic artists use their machines as merely tools of convenience, Houle regards his with a dedication found in few producers.
The results have been extraordinary. A decade-long career of seminal records on Hawtin’s Minus label, as well as his own Items & Things imprint, that not only helped define the beloved minimal sound of the mid-‘00s (“On It”), but had a laugh at its expense (“Techno Vocals”), before transcending the limits of the sub-genre completely by incorporating industrial, disco and new wave influences
(“Undercover”).
A committed live performer, he arrives at each gig equipped six superb albums worth of material, whilst the inception of his new project alongside Octopus Recordings founder Sian sees this number multiply extensively, as the duo weave together hypnotic, warping soundscapes as they deliver Marsian (Live), with their 2018 debut tour which began in Detroit and navigated throughout the Americas setting the tone and vision from the off.
And then there is the steady stream of new music - whether it's material on the likes of Innervisions, where Houle has contributed to the label’s renowned 'Secret Weapons' series as well as delivering his stand out 'Silver Siding' EP, or remixes of classic cuts (like those found on the 10-year anniversary remix of his Restore album by Joris Voorn, Popof, Julian Jeweil and Danny Daze), plus a string of Items & Things remix packages that have welcomed artists such as Chloe and Tobi Neumann to the imprint to date. Not strictly bound to electronic music in the traditional sense, Houle’s work has also led to explorations into film, producing a score of Kurutta Ippeiji’s 1926 original silent film 'A Page of Madness' to critical acclaim.
Add the equation a deeply rooted connection and affinity with the city of Detroit, widely regarding as the birthplace of Techno, and equally as close ties to Houle’s current adopted home of Berlin, exemplified through his creation and development of 2018’s 'Sound of Berlin' documentary soundtrack, and it’s no wonder Houle’s records have found their way into the crates of DJs far-flung from his typical list of peers.
