Eric Umble is a versatile artist based in Brooklyn, known for his skills in sound art, clarinet, DJing, and event production. He has a classical music background and a passion for experimental sounds, which inspired his transition to DJing. Eric is also the co-founder, lead producer, and resident of FACETIME, a community-based platform that promotes music, dance, and visual art through events in NYC and beyond. He is a regular performer at various venues in New York, offering an eclectic blend of driving, hypnotic, uplifting, melodic, and groovy beats that never fail to mesmerize his audience.

The mix features minimal, driving, and loopy techno tracks that intensify the uplifting and melodic elements. Eric incorporates disco and house elements, using acapella vocal loops to enhance the minimal material. He mixed with two CDJs, keeping the energy high with a fast style and exploring slower tracks at higher speeds. The recording was a single take, intentionally raw and unpolished, showcasing the energy that resulted from taking risks.

With your classical background, what do you think are some elements that are similar between techno and classical music?
"On a personal note, my entire musical life has been a journey of honing into the spaces where I felt seen, supported, actualized, and safe. This started with an interest in clarinet as a closeted queer kid growing up in a Mennonite family in PA. I didn't have language to process my experience as a queer person, and clarinet gave me a method to communicate beyond words, along with a community. Discovering techno took this to a new level for me. As a DJ, I aim to share this sense of community and safety, hoping to contribute to spaces where others can feel safe enough to take a step toward healing. This is what techno does for me, and it's what I hope we can all do together through sharing and holding space for each other.

On a musical note, my favorite music to perform as a clarinetist was long-form and repetitive, and I became curious about how musical material develops over time and how methods of progression affect our experience of time. I also performed a lot of process-music that explores musical forms driven by the means and parameters of a given process vs. the traditional linear development of material. I find these concepts present everywhere in techno. When listening to a classical work that reaches a musical climax, I always want it to STAY THERE for a while and live in that climax. But it doesn't; the line continues somewhere else. Techno can sometimes feel like the climax is always there, never releasing, and unrelenting. I find this unresolved tension deeply cathartic."
