[TAKE ME OVER] Lux Gemini ⏤ Mætonimia

After the Lumbung series, we were extremely busy with building Becoming Press, and the radio host took some time to "just DJ", but we were very much interested in continuing in the direction that had been taken with Affects & Dreams, and we planned the next community radio experiment. 

This time around, given that the show was now being hosted by Becoming, we reached out to our community to put together another 12-episode series of two-hour Sunday morning recordings. There were a lot of great recordings submitted, some more consistent with the previous iteration of the project than others, and in general Affects & Dreams v 2 has a slightly different character than the first. Ultimately we wanted to see what would happen if 10 other people were asked to respond to the first series, and how they would respond to discussions we held about hegemony, mixing, dance music, atemporality and so on. Each contributor placed themselves in the position of "Mister Senior Love Daddy" from "Do The Right Thing", and imagined that the signal they were broadcasting served the function of binding together a social group, and becoming an important part of their symbolic World (as pertaining to Baudrillard's idea of the symbolic world). 

The series is around 23.5 hours long, and includes contributions from NCX3, Jess Jessica, Polymnìa, BillyD, grsha, Terminal Beach, Cha'lie, Marco Simioni, Mille Plateaux and Akirosa Palais.

BIO
Inspired by I-f in the late 90ies Ian Martin started to follow the path of underground quality music. Always finding his own sound within the alternative sonic spectrum. His DJ career started as a resident at the Rotterdam Bootleg DJ cafe, where underground freaks came together.

Nowadays Ian Martin is a seasoned artist and DJ in the underground electronic music scene. His DJ sets create exhilarating combinations and musical and apocalyptic madness. From acid to electro and techno, he always presents the pearls of the genres. As an artist he has more than 25 releases on his track record on labels like Bunker, Strange Life, Pinkman, New York Haunted, Minimal Rome and many others.

Always eclectic, ranging from electro, minimal wave, techno and dark ambient and drones. Melancholic at times. His weekly show SEER on the epochal Intergalactic FM has brought kaleidoscopic music into the scene. Also he has residencies at Operator and Mutant.

Being full of contradictions (sophisticated yet raw, apocalyptic yet divine/celestial), his sets guarantee originality, stormy and melodic mania. Music for the Universe!

The direction was unclear back then – and, truth be told, it still is – yet I’ve decided to share with you my first attempts at making music. It felt like the right moment to do so – a kind of eulogy for a different Marco, a version of myself from another era who no longer exists. A tribute to his work and dedication to the craft; someone who found a sense of comfort in making music for himself. Despite countless failed attempts, he continued along the path.

Today’s Marco is quite different – someone who lingers more in the past. But he’s also on the verge of major life changes, positive ones. So releasing this collection of early tracks felt necessary, like a final nod to that past self – to the one who kept going.

As the title suggests, this is a collection of early tracks I created around 15 to 20 years ago. You can hear the experimentation, the various trials – some acceptable, some less so – and a few interesting ideas beginning to take shape. However, everything remained in a very embryonic and amateurish stage.

The original project files are now long lost, so I’ve done my best to remaster the surviving exports – the only remnants of these tracks.

Among them is the very first, original version of the recently released "smart box" (check out my album "Essence Through Approximation" on Evel Records). It dates back to a short but significant period when I was working with Fruity Loops, just before I switched to Ableton – and never looked back.

I hope you enjoy listening, and please be kind to the 15–20-year-old version of me! 😄
